Right now none of the seating is comfortable for TV viewing. Love the rug. If you are getting rid of the wood burning stove how about the TV on the hearth (not above mantel, that is too high).

Why are you removing the wood burning stove? Are you looking to replace it with another heat source? The TV doesn't seem to be in the best spot for optimal viewing. If you're not replacing the stove with another heat source, perhaps it would make sense to move the TV above the fireplace. How much space do you have between the couch and the door? Could you have twin shelves area flanking the sofa with one having a desk area? You could place two filing cabinets under a board for a desk. Here's a short YT video from Sarah Richardson on simple DIY desk areas. If you want to dissimulate the dresser, you could probably paint it the wall colour.

@tartanmeup Thanks for your input! We've never used the stove and it seems outdated to me so I thought, "Why not get rid of it". No idea what to replace it with?

If you have never used the stove then for sure sure get rid of it. I guess my question is what is the main purpose of the space ? I see office stuff crammed in a corner , is that a must to have an office ? Is this your actual TV room? I love the rug it is IMO the only life in the space. Love the idea of the TV on that hearth , it would almost be at perfect viewing height there. If the office is a must then plan to have 2 areas in the space if that dresser needs to stay make that office storage or move it out. Get a bigger desk with space for the file cabinet underneath .Anything more I woudl need to scale floor plan and ansers to some of my questions. BTW I always like LED lighting in 4000K for true color choices that look good at night and in the daytime. How many people will be using the space usually ?

This is not the Main seating area. The door you see in the picture leads to a kitchen/living room open space. I wish I could show you a video.

The space pictured is more of a private living room for me and my husband because the master bedroom is super small(the reason for the dressers in this area). My mom is living with us temporarily and is the reason we closed off this side of the house.

Open to all ideas. Your input and suggestions are appreciated!!!

Could you post a to scale floor plan it is always hard to get an idea of actual space from pictures. Show measurements, window and door placement and the hearth.

@Patricia-Let me see what I can come up with! I clearly have NO design skills.

Depending on priorities here, I'd consider either leaving seating as is and add a large piece of art over the couch (with colors to coordinate in some way with the rug), or turn the couch to face the TV (making the office space more separate), if that fits, and then put the chair on the current couch wall (with narrower art in between). In either case, I'd add something smaller over the desk to help define that spot -- a cork board or a cheery picture. Also a floor lamp by the stool end of the couch (or the fireplace end if you turn it) for more room lighting choices and in case you want to read or work.

Get an estimate for the fireplace before you commit -- you're not just taking out the stove, but you have to do something to the whole fireplace insert to make it weather-safe and sealed off. Might barely be worth the trouble, especially if the TV could stand on legs on the hearth right in front.

Here's an example to show the effect of art. I gave you an office chair with a bit of substance, but you could go even further toward arm chair if you thought you might want more seating in this room (since you could swing the extra chair around to the conversational area).

we actually have our TV on the hearth. it was supposed to be temporary, but we really like it there - it's right at eye level. in your case, the TV will block whatever is left behind when you remove the stove.

I'd remove the mantle (or bookshelf) on the brick wall. the framed photos could be moved to above the dresser.

speaking of that dresser, it's a bit imposing. suggest replacing it with something less wide, with legs. a natural wood, or a light color. if it doesn't fit all your stuff, maybe put your off-season clothes in storage? (I have a tiny closet and had to do it, it's really not so bad.)

or if a new dresser is not in your budget, maybe paint what you have for now. to make that task easier, you could probably get away with painting just the drawer fronts only. maybe teal? add gold tone drawer pulls for interest (and to help preserve the paint job). I think that could look really cool. (drawer fronts could also be done with peel and stick wallpaper.)

I’m with you about that rug. It just looks disjointed, loud, and busy to me.

Since this is for a comfy den-type of room, I think a soft shag would be nice. Example:

Then I’d bring in colors with textiles: pillows, curtains, and art. West Elm and Pottery Barn both have some great choices — textures, colors, etc.

I’d get a side table on one side with a table lamp, then maybe a floor lamp on the other. It’ll make the room so much cozier.

I do like the idea of the TV on the hearth as BF shows. This sounds like your “escape” room, so comfort and function is key. :)

I’d put the desk under the window and get a bookcase or shelf unit for the wall next to it ... or get a corner desk unit with shelves above (on the wall where it is now).

Just an example (I don’t know measurements). And add shelves above.

@B F- 100% agree about the dresser. Its actually 3 dressers stacked together. We had so much more space in our previous room but switched to the one that had the connecting bathroom....

Anywho, I'm not opposed to getting a new dresser was just hoping to see if I can make what I have work. Maybe I'll try painting it first to see how I feel but I also hate to ruin a dresser I could possibly sell😉

In a post Covid-19 world you may want to hang onto that stove. A year down the road things may look very different than they do today. Is your sofa too wide to sit perp to the stove wall facing the TV? You could put the chests and TV opposite the stove. Wall mount TV on an articulated arm, or set it on a swivel base and you'll have more flexibility to arrange seating.

@Jinx you get me❤. I love earth tones and gold/brass accents. I have them in my Kitchen/Living room(Another story for another day). I also showed my husband that exact light fixture for in here. I didn't want anything to hang because of the low ceiling.

It being a seller's market we're probably not moving anytime soon. This is our first home and we've been here 14years.

if you think you might sell the dressers, you can do a temp fix with peel-and-stick wallaper (which is thicker / easier to work with than shelf paper). I think your dressers are Ikea Malm? those have such nice smooth surfaces and clean edges, perfect for wallpaper. it will be a temp solution though (the edges might start to peel where you pull open the drawers).

BUT -- maybe let that be a project for later? once you get your whole room pulled together, your dresser might look fine as-is until you have time / money to replace it with a new one.

Did that too but I thought the ruggggggg just threw it off. Seem like I was trying to hard to "match". Maybe with a different rug!
