Please be critical :)

Just moved into a new home and older furniture doesn’t seem to “fit” into new home.

What changes would you make?

Chandelier ideas? Furniture ideas? Color changes?

I think the furniture works fine. The grey couches are dark enough to pull the dark tones from the fireplace sone, but I don't love the light grey-toned curtains on the tan wall though. Maybe something in the fun orange-red color of the chair pattern?

What about a really big ottoman to span the space between the two sofas? Is there an end table between the chairs? Maybe remove it and pull together the chairs a bit and put another end table on the side of the couch closest to the dining room instead that can be accessible from couch and chair.

Jonathan Louis has a bunch of great ottomans - measure and use cardboard to give you an idea of how big. Choose a color to stand out on the rug. Maybe a deep Brown leather to echo the tones in the floor and fireplace stone.

Some larger scale, updated artwork would be fun too.

You need some artwork to tie in all the colors you have going on in the room.
Red/tans/greys. The picture of the owls looks out of place and attracts way to much attention.
    Attention.

The furniture seems to fit fine. The owls look cute, but might be better in a kids playroom or bedroom. I don't think the drapes work that well right up against the fireplace. I am not a fan of plantation shutters, but this is a location that would probably look better and more finished with plantation shutters.

Pull the furniture together with red pillows or throws on the gray sofas. I agree with other posters about the need for artwork to tie the room together. (And move the owl picture to another room.) Another way to perk up the draperies is to add some trim. You can use a good fabric glue and apply grosgrain ribbon to the sides. I would use red or dark gray or even both colors side by side. Finally, with your beautiful ceiling trim, a chandelier will just distract from it.

I agree with all of the above, you could do sooo much better with a livelier curtain panels. The red/gray chairs are the life of that room...the gray is a drag you need to spread the life around!!! And that empty wall..the owls are not enough on it. A gallery perhaps!! I am not a fan of the blinds with curtain panels that seem to be the trend. Let the outside in!

I'm in agreement with what others are saying. Remove the holdbacks from the curtains and spread the rods out a bit so the curtains hang straight with the inside edge just touching the window trim. Bring some of the red from the chairs over to the pillows.

Then find some artwork you love that brings in a bit of the red.

Where do you set a drink or a book if you sit in those chairs or the loveseat? How do you read or do the crossword puzzle or needlework in those seats without additional lighting? The coffee table is floating in the middle of the room, too far away to actually be serviceable. I think if you consider and solve some of those basic livability issues, you will also move towards solving the "look" issue.

Have you tried reorienting the furniture with the sofa directly across from the fireplace? If you do you can place chairs on the side and maybe you the loveseat elsewhere. I would also suggest replacing the coffee table with one that has legs. The current one is so solid in mass that it looks clunky. Perhaps one with a metal frame and glass top. I would also replace the owl artwork with something else that is perhaps larger. Good luck!

What a pretty room! It's a small thing, but one thing I would do is paint the wall vent the same color as the wall so that it's not as much a a distraction from your artwork. You have a great start on creating a warm and welcoming space.

Get a bigger rug. Right now it looks like a kid who has outgrown his shirt and pants... awkward and too much skin (aka floor) showing.

Does that room have a lot of light once the blinds are open? If not, I would work at lightening it up alot, like with lighter paint.

    I would try different layouts:

    - The wall is really long and maybe slide the couch to the left to be centred and back up whole arrangement /rug for better balance.

    - Place couch facing fireplace. Highly suggest adding a wall unit. Ottoman at fireplace, matching chairs facing love seat and see which of two directions you like best. Keep tv where it is or place in wall unit.

above but with wall unit if possible

    Decor:

    - Whatever you decide to do, I think you need a large coffee table. Remove ties from curtains.

    - Maybe because I’m not a fan of red, I could see your room with softer, earth tones similar to second picture and then replace artwork to suit...

....if possible and interested, make a plan and you can add slowly.

The challenge with drapes is that the space between the window and the fireplace is relatively narrow. To avoid overlapping the window itself, the drapes would need to touch the fireplace. You can do this if you remove the decorative finials and have the drapes go to the end of the rod.

The disconnect for me are the tones.

The walls, floor, ottoman, and fireplace are warm.

The furniture, rug, and curtains are cool.

You need to bridge the two by painting the walls a cooler color, getting a rug with both color waves and accessories that do the same, like throw pillows. Remove the owl painting and curtain tie backs.

I think it works just fine. add a sectional and a nice coffee table end tables and paint the walls a white with a smush of mint in it and open it up those beautiful ceilings and it looks cold and unappreciated in there. livin it up earth tones, with the paint color I suggested maybe even replace the tile on the fire place. with some porcelain faux wood tile and white grout vertically to bring attention to that beautiful architecture of the ceiling

This layout may work for your room. Center sofa, rug and coffee table on the fireplace and then work from that point out. Looks like you might have room for a console table. Any outlets in the floor for lamps?????
