This kind of a fireplace actually has a very modern style to it. You say it's being refaced - are you keeping the niche on the right hand side? If you have the option, I would probably close that in. Mostly due to the fact that the openings aren't even on the horizontal line. Closing that up would pull your focus completely to the fireplace itself. Once that is done you can work with art and accessories to create a great finished and balanced look.

go to the Houzz search line and type in "asymmetrical fireplace" -- maybe you'll find some inspiration there.,

Thought - it might have been that the box to the right was for wood to be stacked there. With books and decor items in that area and a chair (maybe the green one) to the left of the fireplace, that will create balance. You need the weight on the left side of the room to carry that entire wall . I might even add a floor lamp next to the table to give that corner a bit of light. I love that its asymmetrical! Without seeing the whole room its hard for me to comment on how it might work best with the whole space. So I will just address the fireplace as I see it. We do concrete fireplace surround all the time that are not symmetrical and they are usually the ones that we like the best. Here is a couple photos, hope they will inspire you, perhaps even enough to look into concrete as an option! Love what A Cut Above did to transform that fireplace wall!

If the new fireplace facing engages the wall to the ceiling, rather than being cut off, it will give a lot more strength to the look. it can be a traditional look with set back over-mantel paneling and crown, or something more contemporary if it goes with the house better. Also, have a mason check why the smoke is discoloring the current finish before applying something new. It may be correctable, but you don't want to stain the new area. Have fun! Mary
