Ideas for counters?

I'm considering removing the cabinetry on my island to open up my kitchen, but I'm uncertain about what I would want for counters (now a dark granite on one part and a brown pebbly-quartz on the parts near the window and stove). The first contractor suggested painting the cabinets white. I don't want to do that because I don't want to disrupt the style of the house (lots of wood, arts & crafts vibe). I'd rather work with what I have. Concrete, quartz, marble??
