Frost and other stuff

What a cool April and May. We might have frost tonight, and Friday night we may have a FREEZE, Sunday frost, and next Tuesday frost. It is rare to have it so late. Mid April is more typical for the last frost though they do warn us not to plant annuals before Mother's Day in case.

I'm tired of the performance of my Irises. Every year they barely bloom or don't bloom for any or no reason. This year is the frost. Last year no reason that I could see. I've got a couple that bloom regularly right next to the house, so I'm moving a few to the side of the house where there is nothing but grass [not a side we ever go in or do anything with] and return some prime real estate to the daylilies.

My iris have not done well this year either, although they were glorious last year. And I just heard there is a possibilty of snow Friday night! Of course, it won't stick. Unless the temps drop more for Friday, I don't really think daylilies would be hurt here. But I am seeing a few scapes! I don't know if scapes could take it. I may cover them. I get what you say about iris. When they are blooming well, they are wonderful, but for such a brief time. I am slowly downsizing my iris.

Brad - I get what you're saying. My irises were looking so grand last week, and then two bad storms and heat came over the weekend. About a third of the iris scapes are down on the ground, and the rest have faded looking blooms. In a couple of past years with late frosts, they haven't bloomed at all. I don't have many irises, and never will for those reasons.

Spring of 2018 my glorious clump of Edith Wolford iris gave me NO blooms. I dug it all up put a few pieces in another place. I couldn’t justify the space they took up for no blooms. I’m waiting to see if I get blooms from them this season. I have very few full sun spots here, the daylilies get the top spots.

I used to have as many iris as I had daylilies. But after blooming gloriously for a couple of years, they bloomed less and less. And the weeding! I am having the most blooms I had had for several years, but about half of them aren't blooming at all. I have read you are supposed to dig and replant them in another place every couple of years for great booms...Not happening here as beautiful as they are, the season is too short for that.

Brad and all. I am so sorry for the lousy weather. We had floods for months, and now you couldn't buy rain and that is the forecast for a couple of weeks at least. It is cool and supposed to be very cool Saturday, but no frost this far south. Weather always makes things more difficult. It isn' supposed to be this cool in May!

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I am in good company in regards to the Iris.

I don't mind the large amounts of rain we've been getting. I'll take that over drought any day. It is the cold weather that is blah. This too will pass.

Same stuff going on here . It is bitter out there with a north wind blowing like crazy . Super crappy spring . It is not enjoyable to be out and about in the gardens right now . This morning was actually warmer than it is out there right now . Stupid Weather . Not sure we will get snow but we will get frost. much the same weather for the rest of the week . I think we have had 2 days in the double digits in the last month but haven't made it to 20 c. (68 farenheit )yet .
