No shelf above the couch if you want to display those pictures get them framed and then do a collage above the couch and you need it to be much clser to the couch so a bout 6” above the back will be the start. A shelf above a sofa always feels like it will fall on your head and to put it a the right height people will bonk it with their heads.

Thanks! I really truly appreciate your comment. It does come with a super sturdy hanging system so although people may feel like it is going to fall on them, at least I know it won’t. I know this is frustrating but...let’s assume I’m going to do it anyway and not listen to your wise advice. I lowered it...but like you said, only 6 inches above would definitely have people bonking their head on it. So, just looking at it, is that any better? There is no way I could hit my head on it but when my husband gets home I’ll have him try as he is taller.

If you want flexibility without a lot of holes in the wall, why not use a gallery hanging system instead of the shelf. There are many types. This is an example

The shelf should be placed above the head of the tallest person you may ever have sitting on the sofa. I like the idea of changing your display occasionally and a shelf gives you more options.

Sit on the sofa and lean your head back all the way to touch the wall - no one does that unless they’re passed out.

The picture ledge Beverly suggested would be a better choice.

This is what I have...like I said it is 5 inches deep.
