Home Depot has a black or white low cost fan with an LED light that has more than enough light for a 10x10 room. We use them a lot as they have a clean polished look to them and are all one solid color. They are approx $89 or so.. It is a sleek modern looking piece that you will easily spot in the store. Sorry cant remember model.

You can always install a basic fan and have an electrician wire in a few recessed light towards the corners of the room. Do you have attic space over the bedroom? If you do, then it will be quite easy for an electrician to do the job.

You want to make sure a recessed light isn't too close to a fan or you get a strobe-like effect when the fan is running.

Can you just use table lamps and/or wall sconces for light? I tend to prefer those in a bedroom anyway. Downlighting can be so harsh.

Good ideas- can you do wall mounted lamps without special wiring? i know sconces took pre-planning, but the wall lamp idea is cool. I assume it would still need to be plugged in tho, if not wired for a switch,...right? so many new crazy things coming out I often assume something isn’t possible, when sometimes it actually is- so just curious. And lastly, a “hugger” fan, is the closest I can get to ceiling right? Are all “huggers” created equal, or will some brands have closer “hugger” dimensions than others?

Just get a plug in wall sconce, one for each side of bed...its the bedrooms, you don't want bright light.

I am reading all this talk about a hugger fan and trying to get your fan as close to the ceiling as possible. The thing is, hugger fans are not the best choice for an 8 foot ceiling. Almost all standard mount fans that have a 3" to 4" downrod are designed specifically for 8 foot ceilings. Hugger fans are for ceilings that are lower than 8 feet and should only be used when absolutely necessary due to their poor performance.

The reason is, when you get any fan blades closer than 12" from the ceiling, the air does not flow freely around the blades. It tends to bounce between the ceiling and the blades, which causes reverberation that can make a fan vibrate and make noise. So most hugger fans are designed specifically to move less air so as to minimize this effect.

A standard mount fan where the blades are 12" from the ceiling is what meets normal building codes and will give you much better and quieter performance. Also, by not eliminating standard fans from choices you will dramatically increase your selection.

I find lights on the bottom of ceiling fans and in the center of bedroom ceilings to be uncomfortable. I prefer to light task surfaces and walls. I like bedroom lights on the wall next to the bed. Did it from the ceiling with pin spots once but I'm not sure how successful it was. I have used a pendant in a living room when the room needed a central focus point.

It works great, was not expensive, easy to install and has no wobble etc.... All of our other fans have 4 bulbs like this in our kids' 9' rooms and it is their main light. We went with 4 bulbs because of the other options had such shaded glass that the light output was poor. Our kids also have a table lamp on their nightstand for nighttime reading. We get so much natural light during the day from our windows that the kids only turn their light or table lamp on at night. I have also cut down rods so that fans are at proper height for the room. I have an old Casablanca fan that was in a 1.5 story room and cut the downrod so that it would fit in our 9' living room.

A wall mounted lamp does not need special wiring. You plug it in to a wall outlet, like any other lamp.

I would get rid of the ceiling fan, snake a wire to one or more of the room's corners and install 3/4" depth surface LED to standard wiring boxes. Cover the old fan outlet with a round plate. That will make the ceiling feel higher and the room wider. You could make the new lights recessed wall washers or adjustable spots that shine on the walls.

This is a 52" Hunter Palermo fan - I have 2x60 watt LED (equiv) on a remote dimmer (comes with fan). Drop down is 14" from this 8' ceiling. Works for me. Fans are a nice add, You could put in 2x100W LED if you wanted to do surgery.

That ceiling is too low for a fan. Go with pot lights or low-profile surface lights.

A fan that close to the ceiling would not move any air around, I am unclear why you need a fan in these rooms, especially since your only concern seems to be how close can you get it to the ceiling and how bright the light is.

Put a flush mount light in the room skip the fan.

if they need a fan get a portable one they can plugin and use.

Maybe select a nice light fixture that can be bright when needed and put it on a dimmer, then install a wall fan?
