How do you keep the oak grain from coming through on painted cabinets?

Want to have oak cabinets painted but everyone says the grain will show. These look really good. Can I get this look?

You actually cannot prevent it entirely from coming through. These cabinets even have some grain showing. Many many coats and the grain still shows. I still think some grain coming through is worth it. A good paint job is really important. I think best left up to a professional.

I did have the cabinets painted and I did use a professional. He did an excellent job. I love them. If you ever need someone in St. Louis, I have the guy.

Great job! I no longer live in Saint Louis, but I may use him on the home there I'm planning to sell. Thanks for sharing!

Did you use the Valspar primer, or just multiple coats of paint? We are looking to do this same thing in our new home. Your cabinets turned out beautifully - exactly what we are looking for.

We had a professional do the painting of cabinets (he also did our staircase). When I asked him he said he sanded and then primed with a pigmented shellac. He then painted it with Behr Ultra satin finish.

I think one of the biggest concerns regarding painted cabinets is chipping. My niece used the same guy I used and she hasn't had any chips so far. She did hers 6 or so years ago.

Did you keep the interiors of the cabinets their original color? I would think that painting the interior portions might be a real challenge.

I had a professional do it and they did paint the insides of the ones that were oak. Some had white particle board inside and we left those alone.
