I can't wait to get Diablo Hawk too, Paul. Any of your great photos of that rose available? Be sure not to post them if you think they will sell out again at RVRs, if you do post, before I get one.I need to get one before all the hoarders get them.

Maybe it will find it's way back to you if I get one and show photos you can't resist, Paul. That is too bad.

Such beautiful roses! I got Umbra and Etienne from Rogue Valley this spring. They are big, lovely plants with BUDS! I'm so excited about them, and will try to post pictures when the flowers open. I have a feeling I'm going to really, really love these two! Oh, and needless to say, my beloved and stunning Mel's Heritage is covered in buds, its such a spectacular thing. Thanks Paul for creating so many gorgeous roses!

Frances, my new Umbra is probably mislabled. Please post photos when yours opens. I'll put mine here too.

I think John from Portland has Umbra. Maybe he'll post a pic, Sheila. It's a GORGEOUS purple Gallica! If I have a large nursery pot to spare, I'll be snagging one, too. I'm waitlisted at RVR. I'd like to collect all of Paul's roses, but due to space and other practical constraints, I must pick and choose. You and Frances are going to swoon over your Umbras as the bloom colors do their magic kaleidoscope tricks from bud to maturity.

Thanks to you and others on this thread, I have 'Dakota Redwing' in my RVR cart and am looking around to see if other Barden roses have popped up in availability while I've been occupied elsewhere. I spotted a Kim Rupert 'Purple Buttons' and will grab another one of those while I am shopping. I'm on a very, very strict budget these days, but I have a friend who is coveting my PB and I'd like to gift one to her. I'd like to add a third rose to my RVR cart to make shipping costs more worthwhile. I don't have room for many more roses in my garden or pots. I am STILL waitlisted for the much-worshipped-and-longed-for 'Allegra,' darn it! I saw the mother plant in Paul Barden's garden, and it is even lovelier and more fragrant than its 'Duchesse de Montebello' parent. I suspect it will become a top ten of all time rose for me.

I love that RVR has a menu category on the left side of the page entitled "Paul Barden Roses." So convenient to just open the website and click. I wish RVR had an in stock only search feature though. I do see a number of Bardens in stock: Dakota Redwing, Dragon's Blood, Gallicandy, Golden Buddha, Incantation, Jeri Jennings, Won Fang Yon. Carol

Carol, I recently tried to get Dakota Redwing from RVRs and while listed there as in stock, they refunded me because they could not find any. I do have Won Fang Yon but buds are not open yet. I agree the PB gallicas are to die for. My "Umbra" is not entirely open but looks totally wrong. I'll wait another day until I post photos so it can open further. I bet if we were there together, we could come up with the best third rose for you. Oshun? I wish I were more help. I wish our favorites were in stock.

Oooo, and if you click on "Explore Our Roses" at the top of the RVR webpage, there's not only a link to Barden roses on the right side of the page, there's a slideshow of photos! I need to get out and about more in the virtual world. I'm missing all kinds of goodies! Carol

Well, Sheila, here's hoping with all fingers crossed that your Umbra is correct, but alas, I know that a number of roses I've received have not been, so you might be due another RVR refund. I just gambled on a couple of Dakota Redwings, so we'll see what happens. When I really want a rose, I order two for a better shot at the lottery payoff. If my number ever comes up on Allegra, I may order three to increase the odds. I'm not an obsessive gambler, except when it comes to roses. Ha, ha. Carol

@Sheila z8a Rogue Valley OR Here are a couple photos of 'Umbra'. Take a look at the foliage and buds, as they should help you determine if you have the right plant. The foliage is Gallica-like, but leaflets aren't as wide as most Gallica foliage, and there's often a red band of pigment running down the petiole (top photo, upper right area). I hope that helps. You'll know soon enough when the buds open, I suppose. Sadly, so many mislabeled plants coming out of RVR.

Won Fang Ton looks great. Healthy attractive dark foliage too. Monsieur Tillier parent. I'm not seeing any crisping of bloom 93 F today.

My Dakota Redwings and company from Rogue Valley Roses arrived! I wanted to share how nicely RVR packs its roses. They are in beautiful condition!

Removing the plants is easy, too. If you slice the clear tape holding the pots in place, beginning with the sides and bottom, and then lift the outer row of roses up, you can easily slice the tape along the top of the pots and remove the outer layer of roses from the box. Then just lather, rinse and repeat on the inner layer and voila!

All fingers crossed that everything matches its label. Carol

Wow, Totoro! What a beauty.

Sheila, Won Fang Yon is a stunner of a rose! For it to do well in that much heat is a definite plus. totoro, Oshun is also drop dead gorgeous. I just went to RVR to look at Paul's roses and was so impressed at how many they are, and all are utterly beautiful.

Ingrid, it was 96 F here. Won Fang Yon looks great on the Patio cement in a black plastic pot. Sadly Star of the Republic whose bloomed opened yesterday is fried already. Maybe it does better in humid heat.

Totoro - your Oshun is wonderful!! Is it fragrant? And no thrips damage!

That plant is long gone. It didn't survive more than about 3 years in the test bed. Insufficient vigor, lack of disease resistance led to its demise.

There are many beautiful blooms saddled to tragically poor plants, and its best they perish in testing, as this one did.

Sheila I am getting Star of the Republic, so will update on heat and humidity. Sorry yours did that!

Sheila did your Umbra come out correctly? I have that one if it doesn't. I am still trying to get my hands on etienne. When RVR had it instock I didn't have the funds. I also have Allegra babies, as long as pictures are correct , they are loaded, and Paul doesn't object, of course.

Alana, that is so kind. My Umbra was incorrectly named and turned out to be HP Ulrich Brunner Fils. I would love to get the real one and would pay of course.

I have a tiny newbie Etienne that hasn't bloomed yet but it is from Paul Barden, so I know it is correct.

I have a few baby roses that I'm sure aren't labeled correctly.

I'm sorry, just checked it's Gallicandy that has lots of babies. Isn't Allegra supposed to be the bigger one? It's smaller , unless RVR has them mixed. I will get confirmation as soon as they bloom, make sure they are correct. As long as Paul doesn't mind Sheila, I don't mind sharing. I have one baby on each of those, just cover shipping and give me a month. They generally, (suckers) do better if you cut them, let them form some roots, then pot, get good roots before sending. I wouldn't want them to die,
I would rather send you a good rooted rose.

I'm glad you're getting SotR, Alana. I was planning on sending you cuttings, but a rooted plant is obviously better!

Alana, thank you so much but for the moment I am going to keep trying for Umbra. I have so many in the pink color, I need the darker tones to balance out and give contrast. This Spring I really should go over to RVRs and peek at their entry where Janet said an Umbra lived. I could time it when my gallicas bloom here. If I found a mother plant it could give me more hope. As of now I am wondering if I'll ever find Umbra.

Well, like I said, I may have it. Just didn't see the bloom last year, and did want to verify its identity, because they send some mislabeled at times. I am sure it's correct, but would like to verify. If you can't find it, and decide in fall you would like it, just let me know.

Alana, I would absolutely love that if you have an Umbra. Keep an eye out for me. I would really love that. I could not thank you enough. Not holding out much hope for RVRs having it at this point.
