Your home looks great. It's the landscaping that needs to be revamped. Hopefully a few of the landscape guru's will see your post and give you ideas.

I would remove the lights on the entry and just install a recessed light. Then paint the door and sidelights the same color as the siding.

I agree that a new landscaping plan would be great and I like celerygirl's idea of pulling out the garden area to include the trees (love the boulders!), but I wonder if you might be willing to replace your very traditional door with something more contemporary in the style of your home. I think that would make a huge difference.

I think the portico does not suit the house. The lantern above the portico seems especially misplaced. I would remove it and add a modern awning. Something like this:

The shrubs to the far left of the door do not appear to be doing well. None should be covering windows.

OMG - Some one is torturing your plants and trees. The lights strung on them are doing them no favors. The azaleas should be reduced in height and opened up so the get more light and fill out. Bring down the height of all of the plants so that they don't cover up the window area.

I agree with the suggestion to replace the front door with a more contemporary one with sidelights and with a new portico.

I like the lap siding color, but not like the trim color. I think it would look better if the trim was the same color as the lap siding.

Going back to this. We need a new door, I have done some minor landscaping updates with the shrubs being reduced and bringing in otjer plants. We are in the market for a new entry door or double door. What style would look good?

I think you need a modern style door. If you want to keep it simple, consider a full glass door with something like rain glass or frosted glass if you want more privacy than clear glass. Otherwise, something like this that mimics your narrow window would work.

You would need to update the sidelight glass as well. I hope you will consider updating your light fixture to something more contemporary. I would completely eliminate the fixture above the portico and add something like this under the canopy.
