Ideas for an island surface. Replacing wood island with stone? or ?

Hi All, have a dark wood countertop in the island, other counters are Calcutta Gold. Any ideas on a surface to match or work with this stone? Don't think I can match 20 year old well used counters with new Calcutta. Thoughts appreciated. Max

Hi. Nice countertops. How about a light grey wood? Just a thought. Or you could go with a simple grey/silver tone wood/honed granite or......have you considered glass? Its beautiful and all are sturdy materials.

Why do you want to? It’s beautiful now. If damaged I’d try to repair or replace with same.

Its beautiful. Leave it if possible. If not. Sand and restain?

The dark contrasting on the island is good, so look for something rich and dark. I agree with SashaDog that soapstone would complement the room. Or a really dark quartzite that has little movement in a grey tone.

repair or replace with a walnut counter. i love the wood counter.

    soapstone would look awesome

something dark to contrast the CG. jet mist granite comes to mind, mimics soapstone but at a cheaper price.

Bring in samples . It’s the only way.

Quartz with a contrast color picked from the veining in the rest of the counters or from room.

Can you refinish your existing wood countertop? In the photo it looks lovely. Or you could replace with another dark wood counter.

Thank you all. There is an issue with a board and around the sink the water has damaged it a little. We use the island heavily for cooking so I am weary of just repairing the wood. I looked at soapstone but got little concerned at its softness.I am leaning towards a granite that will be the light grey. Haven't seen Jet Mist ever but will ask. Thanks again for all the feedback.

There are several hard varieties of soapstone that will not scratch or chip. I have one, Belvedere. After 4 1/2 years, there’s not one scratch or chip...not even around the under mount sink, where pots and pans knock into it, during cleaning.

Don‘t just assume all soapstone is soft. There’s a lot of misinformation out there, especially at stone yards whose primary business is granite, marble, and quartzite. Click to enlarge

We have leathered black mist granite (one of the soapstone doppelgängers) and love it.

Copper. Or stainless with a matte finish.

What a beautiful kitchen you have!

The thought that you wont be able to find more Calacatta Gold to coordinate with what you have because of the passage of time is probably incorrect. It would be the most aesthetically pleasing choice to continue the marble. If you are comfortable with the maintenance requirements of your perimeter counters, you should be fine continuing that surface on the island. Just visit stone yards and start looking at slabs. You’ll find one.

Your best bet is to take a photo with you to stone yards and see what grabs your attention. I love the contrast of your wood top on the island, so I vote to keep it dark and different. So many options, you really need to scroll the internet for colors and visit any yards that are open. I’m with darkuba on this one.
