My first guess would be acer palmatum 'Bloodgood', color-wise, but I know that's incorrect. The leaf shape is different. These are really good photos, try posting on the maples or name that plant forum and see if they can id it for you. I readily admit to having limited knowledge about maples.

Treebarb, thank you. That is exactly the reason I liked it so much! Because it has the "look" of Bloodgood. But clearly it isn't. It does give me the idea though to grow this and see if there is a way to prune it like a JM.
