Acer palmatum 'Aconitifolium'

Zone 5A, LaGrange IL


Outside of the 6A microclimate close to Lake Michigan, it's a bit difficult to find a spot where full moon maple can be successfully sited in the landscape. In this established neighborhood there is sufficient protection and the soil is nearly friable, not the heavy clay we see farther west in the suburbs. Love to use this tree when the opportunity arises and it presented itself last year. One year in the ground doesn't mean a lifetime of performance, but it's a good start and the tree leafed out like a champ this spring. Now I'm waiting for the Hosta and Pachysandra to fill out around it.

    I am a collector of Asian maples and Aconitifolium is one of my favorites!! In my climate, it gets to be a good sized tree - 15-20' tall and wide. A gorgeous blend of fall colors with those heavily divided leaves.

    And a pretty vigorous grower as well!! I grow all my Acers in containers and the Aconitifolium has doubled in size in two years!!
