Landscaping ideas corner lot?

I'd like to plant a mixture of shrubs and trees. I live in Michigan. This is the west side of the house and gets between 5 to 6hrs of sun per day in the summer.

Here's a simple scheme that would work and be easy to maintain: 3 matching small trees arranged with two in the back row and 1 in the front -- a triad. (Flowering trees like redbud could be nice.) Smaller shrubs below windows to minimize trimming. It could be one type or two different types of shrubs that correlate to the window types. Colorful perennials, or even lower shrubs, at the house corners, and groundcover in a semicircular bed that encapsulates all the plants. You pick the plants according to their being a proper size and being able to make the shapes/forms desired.

Trees will go a long way to making this space attractive. I would start by identifying native long-lived appropriate species. Plant them in the middle of the yard near the space between the windows on the left and the blank space on the right.

Yardvaark's plan is especially nice for the west because it will help cool the house. The western sun is the hottest sun of the summer and shade is really welcome.
