Can you post a sketch of the floor plan?

Here’s my guess of the floor plan from the pictures (no dimensions). I’m currently in a different city.

Does the desk chair have to be an office style chair on wheels? What are the wood chairs in the picture for?

The desk chair does not need to be an office style chair. I’m trying to avoid that look. The wood chairs are dining room chairs but there’s no dining table. All those chairs were my SIL’s Grandmother’s and they have to be there though we don’t want to use them. Or perhaps I can get chair covers to protect them.

If you can use the wood chairs distributed in the bedrooms that would really help the space.

I'd put the lamp in the corner by the window and have the 2 lounge chairs and rug there. Then the desk on the wall by the stairs or where it is now. As for style of chair and stools maybe the Slope series from West Elm (kinda pricey but maybe find a knock off on Wayfair if you like the look or do just 2 stools) - it comes in a dining and counter height version and you could do leather in one spot and fabric in the other with the same black metal base....The slope series is a look that bridges mid century modern and the style of furniture you have there.

- Go onto Pinterest and search mid century island stools; it will be a great resource; as there so many styles - backs or not, fabric, wood or metal only and size depending on how many you want. Also prices can really vary!

- Then try Wayfair for actual choices/prices and if they include wood, use same tone as cupboards

- In regards to using the rug, it looks small so try to ground vs just in middle of room. If it suits your two upholstered chairs, here is the idea.

- Could also place under desk area and don’t squeeze desk into corner as mentioned. Centre under window and add a narrow bookcase as that’s a long wall and need something or alternatively, a tall plant or floor lamp.

- I would use the chair from bedroom (reupholster the seat with a fun fabric and even paint it) and if a chair is still needed in bedroom use one of the dining chairs. Scatter the remaining chairs around house in other bedrooms

- It looks like you only have one window based on the diagram; the curtains so close to door won’t work and I would just leave in bedroom. Consider a bamboo blind instead.

Like you are thinking, your desk (hopefully it has a finished back) placed perpendicular to the windows with one of the granny chairs as your desk chair on the right side of the window and the other granny chair on the other side. Just place the secondary chair with its back against the window wall. This chair can serve as a place to take off shoes or as a drop spot when coming in the front door. If your desk can accommodate someone sitting on the back side of it, you could position in that way too. Before you wince about using the granny chairs, they look like their padded seats might be easily removed/recovered (turn the chair over and see if it’s just a matter of unscrewing the seat). If you happen to have some spare fabric (that might coordinate better with the upholstery on the SIL chairs) that you like and don’t need, cut a piece of the cloth big enough to cover the seat with a 2” margin and place it over the padded seat and reattach the seat to the chair. Do this to the other granny chair too! They can then be removed when you move out and it will help protect the original seat upholstery. By placing the desk near the window, you have natural light and a window to look out while working. If there is enough room, you could even place that narrow console table behind the primary desk chair to further outfit your “work space”. Or if you are planning for a tv in the space, you could use the console table on the stairwell wall to hold the tv. Then the two newly reupholstered SIL chairs could be place on the long wall slightly angled with the side table (you said you could bring) between the two. Then your rug could be placed in the middle of the room anchored under the upholstered chairs/side table. If your pole lamp is the only lamp available, then I would put that either beside one of the SIL upholstered chairs or between both of them behind the side table you’ll bring. As far as the curtains you want to bring, are they really needed? It looks like there is some kind of window covering on the windows already. Adding those patterned curtains might be too much. As far as counter stools, just pick something basic that goes with everything else in the room.

Thinkdesignlive, it looks like Overstock has a version of the West Elm Slope counter stool in navy which is a color on the border of the rug and in a Japanese Moreno that hangs on the window of the kitchen.

I like the idea of scattering the dining chairs in other rooms. A fourth is already in the basement family room where the TV is. Or recovering with modern fabric pattern (I’d have to buy fabric online) to protect them.

Maybe an ikat design in blue/gold to pull both the upholstered chairs and noren (I learned a new word!) together if you upholster over the dining chair fabric.

Yes, I have two Ghost armchairs for dining table. Perhaps at a future date I can bring the pair. There will not be enough space in the car for the initial move (4 hour drive between apartment and house).

I could not find the stool recommended by Maureen in the US, only on a UK site. Here are two that I found. The navy ones are similar in style to the West Elm Slope counter stool recommended by thinkdesignlive. I thought too like tozmo1 to look at non-wood materials.

Arrangement so far. Ordered white bar stools. No space in car to bring Eileen Gray knockoff round table.

And my SIL says she is ordering wood blinds for the windows.

Thanks for everyone’s advice. I recommended reupholstering the chairs with modern fabric. Compromise is that SIL will get slipcovers instead as this reupholster was expensive. (This is for future when she and my brother downsize to move to this house.) I moved one of the non-matching dining chairs to the bedroom. I like the dining chairs after seeing them in person and the seat covers are pretty. To protect them, SIL added temporary slipcovers to the seats of all the dining chairs. I am still searching for alternative covers but lower priority. Here is an update with the counter stools which I chose because the room is dark, layer another modern element, and they can be wiped down. Our next trip we will bring the standing lamp from the bedroom for the dark corner behind the desk and knockoff Eileen Gray round adjustable table for between the chairs. The room, whole house, has great overhead lighting and could use ambient lighting.

Looking really good, keep the updates coming. Countertop is really pretty as are the floors. Lots to like in this temporary home that you are making even more attractive!

Saddle bar stools can be totally wood or w/padded seat and can be narrow or wide. Those wooden ones with the holes in them can easily be lifted by those holes.
