It looks like a gooseberry. Was it thorny?

Yes, it looks a lot like the species commonly known as Canadian gooseberry, Ribes oxyacanthoides. That is native to much of the upper portion of the US and most of Canada.

It does look similar to Canadian or Northern Gooseberry. I did check and I do see thorns but they are few and far between unless of course they grow anew each year and haven't grown in as much yet? Also, I can find no website that says Ribes oxyacanthoides is present in NY so I am wondering if it is a different Ribes species?

There are SO many Ribes species!! Could also be Ribes hirtellum, aka hairy stemmed or swamp gooseberry.

I was going to say that they look like my currant leaves and they beat me to it.

It's just a Gooseberry. Now move on.

Maybe it's really a currant and not a gooseberry?, but I think cynosbati swings both ways.

I was wondering if it was a currant but I see many much like it in the woods and didn't know which is more prevalent.
