We have old fashioned built in hampers in each bath. In the cabinet under the pull down I put plastic trash cans in different colors to separate clothes. The kids all learned to do their own clothes after squabbling over who did which load and who tossed something in the wrong place. Laundry bags hung in bathroom or bedroom is another option.

How many people are you doing laundry for? There is just the two of us, and I have a hamper in a closet in the master for my more fragile things. A BIG built in hamper in the laundry room for all else.

I seem to do laundry about twice or so a week (every three-ish days) and I sort onto the floor, or delicates into the empty laundry sink for a hand wash machine cycle later. DH folds and takes things back to the bedroom or appropriate bath...each bath has its own color towels so he can't mess it up.

When I was newly married, I worked in the office of an appliance store that had its own in-house 'maytag man'. He taught all of us to do laundry. You didn't mention clothing/fabric weights when mentioning how you sort. That was one of his strict rules for not adding extra stress or wear to clothes. Sort not only by colors but by fabric weights. No navy shirts in with jeans or the shirt would be abraded by wet denim etc....

Maybe that's intuitive to most but my Mom really didn't sort. She had lots of strong skills but laundry wasn't one of them.

I am an odd ball... With 3 people I do:

Non-colorfast darks/blacks (jeans, dark blue, black, etc washed in cold)

Non-colorfast colors (green, blue, some old red items, etc. washed in warm)

Colorfast colors (light green, light blue, pastels, grey, etc. washed in warm)

Colored socks and underwear (despite color, always washed in hot)

Whites (pure white, washed in hot unless protein stains)

Towels, sheets, rags, etc in separate loads with hot

Medical Scrubs typically are washed in warm and baked in the dryer

Oh yes, I forgot I also have a basket for delicate clothes

I have a smaller laundry basket in the master closet. When it gets full I bring it to the laundry room and dump it into a larger laundry basket. When I am ready to do wash I rummage through the laundry basket and throw items for whatever type load I am doing into the washer. I have the following types of loads: sheets, towels, colors, delicates. If it's cold weather I usually have a separate sweater load. We actually don't have whites. I have a separate laundry basket for the clean clothes coming out of the dryer.

DH does his own laundry in two loads: white, and not-white.

When I did the laundry for the rest of us, I had white, light, colors, jeans, sheets, and towels. I didn’t have hampers for the sheets and towels, just pulled them from the bed or bath, wash, and put them back into place or on their shelf. Now that the boys do their own and I have less white, I don’t usually have a separate white load for myself.

I used to have three hampers in the laundry room: white, yellow (for light) and blue. Now I have one hamper in my room, and I just sort out the color I’m washing when I’m out of something lol.

Laundry chute to the basement laundry & then sorted into two hampers. One hamper is for whites; everything else into the other hamper. The everything else hamper gets sorted on laundry day.
