With your wall color and furniture I think this room can grow up with him very easily. Add some manly fabrics is but it a fun way. Plaids, stripes, menswear fabrics with a hint of your accent color (primary red, navy and orange are bright and fun). Earthy base colors will keep it manly and grow up so you can add whatever fun kids stuff he likes without it being too baby-ish.

How about a train bed comming out of a tunnel painted on a wall. The tracks could be painted on the floor or inlaid in carpet from the bed to the other side of the room. Lots of low book cases around the room that he can reach for toys and picture books. A play train set across the top of the book cases. Train posters around the room. Train curtains and bedding. Just make it a fun place for him to call his own and let his imagination run wild. Have fun.

If he like trains then he needs room to play. So take down the valance, add bed, storage space, for items, chair for when the big people come in, poufs for siblings and himself. I would recommend something like the following.

Can we see the bed before we comment?

Two things I find fun for childrens rooms are border shelves and clipboard picture holders. The shelf is just a single shelf installed a foot or so below the ceiling and you can begin on just one wall, then add to other walls later as you like or can afford. They are great for displaying those more "precious" toys or treasures waiting for the child to mature a bit. They are also great storage possibilities in small bedrooms.

Clipboards are also fun. From the masonite/metal models or the bright colored acrylic ones, these are wonderful display means for posters and babyish art at first, and then the child's personal art at a later age.
They're found at craft stores and craft departments in the larger box stores. VERY affordable. Both of these suggestions grow along with the child, from toddler to teens and are fun to adapt over the years as the child's tastes change.

Do what he loves, just remember to put it at his height. A train decal or some other application would be great at about chair rail level. Everything above that is for you. (Said the woman who successively had rainbow, boats, race cars and airplanes all in the same room over time.) You might get 2-3 years out of the trains. Have fun! Boys are wonderful.

What memories! Our second son loved trains, too. My dad took the measurements of his room and then made a train track that ran around his room above the windows and doors so he could even lie in bed at night and watch that train run. He used plexiglass and wooden brackets to hold it up. He glued an HO scaled track to the plexiglass and the wires to run it came down ONE corner to the outlet. Those wires were easily hidden behind the dresser. He had one of those striped engineer hats that we kept out in the room, too.

Welllllll ... my husband does the building, and he works from his sketches not commercial plans. I'll see what I can come up with and get back to you. I know there are lots of store shelves available that will work too. Give me a couple of days; I'm working on the flowers for our oldest daughter's wedding this week.
