What groundcover for this area?

The spaces between the stepping stones. I've struggled to get plants to live here. The Mahogany ajuga you see on the far edge was what I started with. But all it wants to do is march straight into the big lush bed. Every year I dig from there and replant, only to have it fail to overwinter.Area has morning open shade and late afternoon house shade. Full sun from about 10 am to 3 pm. Maybe reflected heat from the patio is the problem.I have been testing plants in an adjacent area and so far, nothing is keen on the sun.I DO have to kneel on whatever I plant to maintain the main bed. Plus hose gets dragged across. So whatever I choose has to be able to withstand that.I'm not a huge fan of thyme but maybe that's my only option. Or oregano. My golden Greek oregano loves the sun and is perennial. But it's too bright in color for putting in this whole area.I would really appreciate your opinion. Thanks!
