do not forget.. the most important thing in a pot is the media.. not the plant ... so start with some good stuff ...

also.. small pots dry fast in the sun ... so full bright shade would be best ...

after that.. well ... wait for it.. they are hosta ... just go for it ...

i dont understand why you have to grow them out to find out what color they are ...

but all you sound like you are doing is growing a root mass for the future ...

winter storage might be an issue ... but you dont mention when you are going to plant them ...

learn the pot weight when sodden.. and when it gets half the weight.. water again ... otherwise we cant tell you how often to water ...

take some dry media.. fill a pot ... set aside ... moisten some media.. fill second pot.. and then water it .. and then compare the weights ... and you will see what i mean ...

if you have a local nursery.. ask what they use.. and see if they will sell you a bag of their commercial media... if you like it ....

Sure you can! Think of it like your own little hosta nursery. Choose the appropriate sized pot (not too big), good potting soil with proper drainage, place in a shade to part-sun location, and water frequently. Just think like a garden center!

And since you are in zone 8, you probably don't even have to worry about all the tribulations of over-wintering freezes.

I am just above the Fla. panhandle in Alabama, but we do have some freezes. I hope before that I can have them in the ground with some mulch around them. Thanks again.

My zone small plants are hard to overwinter, for you probably totally different. I have a likely majority of my hostas in pots. It gives you flexibility to create whatever arrangement you want and move things around till you get what you like.

When planting in pots don't use the ceramic type or they will break when winter freezing come. Use plastic inserts if you do like the look. I had extra plants and stuck in pots , tipped them sideways for the winter and out of the weather and they all came back just fine. Our friend in Washington grows all her hosta in pots and they grow just beautifully . Judy's picture
