Grandiose or Practical??!! French or Trinsic??

Our existing 20-year-old French doors need replacing for several reasons. Just renovated small backyard and now have a nice view from the living room of our new sparkling water fountain. Door trim blocks view when sitting in living room and I wish to replace the doors with Milgard's Trinsic sliders (low profile trims) to permit a better view of fountain and to keep out scorpions. Husband believes French doors are essential to aesthetics, value and grandeur of our home. I definitely wish for good resale but also would like a clearer view of our fountain while sitting in living room and would appreciate more secure closure for keeping scorpions out of the house. Bear in mind that we rarely to never leave open both doors or even one of the doors due to heat and scorpions. FYI, our house has a Craftsman front exterior, but I prefer a more contemporary style.

I have no idea what your home looks like but if you like a more contemporry style then go sliders or better yet a nanawall. It is impossible to advise with no context.

Well, your sofa isn't even facing in that direction. I would not remove the French doors.

Get rid of the transom and have the door go up to that top trim. If not, you'll have to do further research. Get on the internet and phone. Your neighbors, friends, relatives, coworkers may have ideas as well - email them all. Use your network! If they can put a man on the moon, they can create French doors that have thinner trims! The older I get, the more tenacious! Keep trying, keep trying, keep trying!!!!

Replace windows, transom and doors with large slider.

Dear Houssaon, Thank you for your response. Our sofa is a sectional and there is more seating opposite the peninsula section that does directly face the doors. The doors have structural issues and must be replaced.

Sliders that go clear to the top will be heavy...it sounds like the layout of the present windows may be the most practical for your needs...with the change into sliders with minimal trim to open up the view ....another option may be 2 big picture windows ....maybe 18”” above the floor ....with one mostly glass door in the center..we have something similar to that...with two doors in the center as it is a much longer run of windows...

The 18” off the floor element relieves the need for the hard to clean sliding door runners...and lessens the welcome mat to the scorpions..
