How about, pop off tiles, patch drywall (assuming that’s what is underneath and paint coordinating somewhat darker color than your wall color all the way up (not including shelving, only fireplace) then add a chunky wood fireplace, similar to one in photo. Would only cost you mantle and paint. I worry you might get sick of patterned tile fast.
