NO. Swapping doors for glass isn't going to help.....unless painting the cabinetry.

Lighting will help a lot - under the cabinets, and perhaps a couple pendants over the island

A change of hardware will help. Pruning the fridge "bulletin board" will help- and yes I realize there are children and it is convenient display and reminder.

A unity in appliances to stainless will help, as they lose function or when they can be replaced.

Point is, I would consider my length of stay in the house. Whether you love the kitchen layout as is or not. Maybe a paint job, maybe a lot of things!......but honestly, its a lot of DOORS. And very few drawers. Do the simple things, first. Add some COLOR......rugs accessories too.

Love the white kitchen! I don’t think a few glass doors will be the solution for the big kitchen. To me, the paint color is drab. The first thing I saw when we toured my current house was a big, black hole. It was the black French door fridge. It sucked the light and life out of the room, aided and abetted by the murky paint choice of the previous owner. I know, I know! “Dump the dishwasher and the range and the microwave? Crazy lady! Do you know what that would cost?” Yes, I do, but I really don’t know what your budget is. I’m just saying that the black appliances are depressing to me. Of course, the other problem with glass doors is deciding which two doors and what do you want to display behind them. Everything in your kitchen just looks so nice I don’t think there is any advantage to glass doors for it.

The counters and backsplash are quite dark and do not reflect light, what little there is.
Decide on a realistic budget for a tune-up or more and put these things on the list for now or later:
Replace counter and backsplash with lighter-colored material.
Add more lighting: under cabinet lighting, more ceiling lighting, over-island lighting. If your house is one-level, consider adding a skylight: mine is about 3’x5’ and brings in light all day until the sun goes down.
Stainless steel appliances are not as heavy as black appliances.
Consider a lighter wall color.
Your cabinets appear to be in good condition. Having them professionally refinished is expensive. If you want to have a couple of the upper doors replaced with glass, remember that most of the cabinet contents is not worth seeing.

in my opinion it is the floor that is the problem. the floor is the lightest surface in the kitchen and squares are busy. if you look at nature, the earth is darker than the sky. I do think a lighter color wall and ceiling would help. cabinets are fine

"Lighten" as in less heavy-I can see how a display cabinet or two would make the bank of wood less heavy. I would choose cabinets that are single when opened(which I don't think I see in your picture..and this is assuming you don't need the storage and have things to display.

A quick change would be to replace the island countertop with a creamy white quartz or granite. You might be able to extend the end toward the sink 12" to add space and still have enough room for dishwasher removal if needed at some point. Can't be sure, but if those tiles are 12 x 12 or larger maybe 18 x 18 there is plenty of room to do that.

The backsplash and counter and wall paint should be changed first, if you want the space to look lighter. Changing some doors to glass will not do it. And the lighting, as recommended by the pros. Some color would liven it up, so if you find a rug you like, that could help. But it looks like you have small children, so it may not be practical for now.

I would change out the black appliances & redesign the colors and materials of the island before I spent money on anything else. You can use the same cabinets for the island but wrap the finish around, add legs and a lighter granite top.

I would first add undercabinet lights. If that does not brighten the space enough, consider replacing the backsplash.

Any option beyond that would be considerably more expensive (replacing counters, which I would not do, or replacing range/OTR microwave with stainless).

If you really only want to switch some of the cabinet doors for glass, get a screwdriver and remove the doors on the two cabinets you think you would want to redo in glass. Leave the doors off for a week and see how you (and the rest of the family )like the look. That should give you an idea of how much or how little it would brighten the kitchen. You won’t have spent any money or cut into two doors only to discover it doesn’t do what you hoped. Best case, you will say it does exactly what you wanted. Then you can proceed!

The backsplash is the culprit. See what continuous under cabinet lighting does.

I would just change your backsplash to a simple cream subway tile. It will significantly brighten the space and is the most cost effective way to do so. Choose the lightest cream from your floor tiles.

In the corner cabinets with lights inside.

If you can bring up your courage, keep the lower base cabinets wood and paint the uppers a creamy white. You will not believe how great this will look!
