Are you confident the long black stripe is a fungal disease ( as the title says)?

I am at a disadvantage for the close-up, as my reading glasses have gone missing.

rifis, well I suppose it could be something else I just have no idea what though. I saw black and assumed something like canker or fungus. I'm still learning about all the diseases.

I've had that. I've cut down to beneath the soil since the stripe reached to the soil. It sucks.

is that the other half of the plant ot the right???

if so.. why dont you solve the problem by just cutting this part back ... below the area if you can ... and putting all the power into the other half???

in my MI .. i used to cut all the foo foo roses down to about 6 inches.. bury in leaf mulch in november .. and then cover with rose cones ... to avoid winter wind burn and the associated desiccation....

it was ammplified on the winter sun side of the plant... where teh tissue went in and out of dormancy on warm winter days.. and freezing winter nights ...

rosecanadian and Ken - thanks for the info! I was super nervous about it. I've removed the cane and cut all the way down to the base so the plant can focus on the healthy side (which yes is on the right - it grew kind of weird, honestly it almost looked like it had TWO bud unions on a single graft). It's looking ok so we will see what happens in the next week or so.

I am so glad I didn't just rip it out! Last year it made such lovely flowers so I can't wait for the flowers this year.

Most of my roses are a mix of pinks, reds and purples. I have some yellows, whites and creams thrown in that give a lovely contrast. Since everything is still a baby for the most part I can't wait to see them all fill in over time.

Good links, Ken, especially for the pnw handbook site. But all the winter rose damage pics I saw showed fairly circumferential black. Did I miss a stripe photo?

Excellent!!! It's hard mentally to cut all of that cane off...but it was a good move!!
