Hosta in ceramic pots and others

There has been much discussion about growing hosta in ceramic containers, so here are mine. I have 9 of my 11 in ceramic. It’s been about 5 seasons now, no breakage, stored in my unheated shed in the winter. I have lost two Mini Skirt Hosta, my only casualty. I have minis, smalls and a medium in the pots. The first photo has from the top down left to right,Blue Ivory, a rescued Stained Glass, in a dish garden is Dragon Tails, Blue Mouse Ears and Mighty Mouse. Next is Wheee, Holy Mouse Ears, .on the ground is Cracker Crumbs, Little Treasure and Sugar and Spice. Only two plastic pots here.

Below is Blue Mouse Ears, Pandora’s Box and Wiggles and Sqiggles All in ceramic pots.

i also have a good sized clay pot shaped like a hen my In-Laws brought from Arizona in 1976. It’s been sitting in a garden bed since then in the winter elements and is still intact. I’m still wondering how this gem was made to survive. I’m going to add a photo of it tomorrow.

Here is my 44 yo terracotta pot, still no cracks. Outside in the weather that long. I had to move it for new patio installation, no problem.

Love ceramic pots! And adore blue colored ones! You got some good ones!

My experience has not been great as yours. Unheated garage/shed produces high losses, small pots with small hosts produces high loss. Big tubs of minies survive well under tarp. Large pot pile up on north side survives well. I have been too chicken to keep pots of value overwinter outside even under tarp. So I cheat. Some are ceramics and they have plastic inserts, and some great looking plastic pots...

Very nice! I have been looking for a low wide blue pot like you have and haven't found one anywhere. I think I like Squiggles in a pot better than in the ground!

Sherry..your potted hostas are beautiful 🙂..I do exactly the same thing with just a few pots..I put them in my unheated shed..my pots are plastic and "fibercast" not ceramic..so far no losses..I sound like an old fuddy duddy but I think products made years ago were better..I had a ceramic jar in my trash today with a hairline crack..maybe 10 years old?..it's been cracked for years and this week I tossed it..tired of wondering when it will finally break..

Very pretty Sherry. Blue pots just make the plants pop---and make for a nice presentation.

Over a decade ago, my father-in-law died, and we had to clean up his house. He had a lot of really nice plants that I didn't fully appreciate back then. He had a very large terracotta pot---I'd say about 18 to 24 inches with a big crack in it. We got rid of it. Now, looking back, I think that pot, crack and all, would have lasted a very long time because he caulked the crack. I think with the right kind of caulking, the pot might have lasted longer than me! Just want to mention that in case anyone wants to try it.

Wow I love them in the pots they look great! I have a snail pot that usually has strawberries or petunias in it each summer and now I'm thinking maybe it needs a hosta. I think a hosta growing out of a snail would be ironic too lol.

Sherry, your pots and plants are beautiful! I agree with others that there is something about the bright blue that just works with the hosta colors. I love the look, but must admit I am to worried about overwintering. I just don’t have a spot to do it......plus all the lugging around....too much for me. Also, gotta cherish that terra cotta chicken!

full of hen and chicks froze and split last winter, Must have forgot to flip it on it's side but will glue it together if I ever find the time these days
