They do come to lights at night. Poor little guys were probably just accidental tourists. Many insect species do have a short period where the adults are really active and plentiful--it seems like there are swarms of them and then they just appear to vanish a few days later.

Larvae of some species of click beetles can damage roots of lawns, but because many are harmless or beneficial, I would not attempt to control them with pesticides until you see actual harm.

I don't think the adults do more than serve as great entertainment for kids and cats. Fix the hole and don't worry about 'em.
