whats the winter plan???

you know that AM could fill the whole pot.. and then some ... you might want to plan on planting them in early fall.. in the ground .... ought to have great roots by then ...

and in the meantime.. later in summer.. divide off some smaller plants ... so you can replant the planter come next spring ... with more size appropriate hosta ....

otoh.... might be a good way to try out winter storage ideas ... since they are all duplicates ...

i cant tell.. what is the pot made out of ... is that an issue???

i dont like the rocks.. but its a brilliant solution to a problem.. two dirty thumbs up ...

How long can you keep a pot like that before it starts to get pot bound and has to be split up?

ken..side pics of the pot..it appears too chubby in pic#1..it's funny how holding the camera really low altered the look..pic#2 is a better representation..I'd say 7" tall..it's hard plastic..my husband drilled a drainage hole..my winter plan - in the shed..it's always worked and protects the pots..I can do it because I don't have lots of pots..I guess I'll see how they do..and if they're big by fall remove some..I agree the rocks don't add to the look..they're temporary until the plants are well rooted and the soil firms up..my squirrels are naughty..

Jon..a good question Jon..I don't have enough experience to say..but I was hoping they could stay this year and next year before I need to work on it..

i meant to ask.. if it was plastic.. or ceramic ... in my ground freeze z5 .. ceramic pots can explode.. if the media goes into freeze with too much moisture.. and expands OUT .. father than up ...

they have some fancy plastic pots that look ceramic these days ...

I think the bowl looks great, rocks and all! I do the same thing when I plant new plants to keep them from digging. Besides the hostas will grow and you won’t see the rocks. I will take a wild guess—- the little green one remind me of my reverted Teeny Weeny Bikini.

ken..the bowl was $6 and I thought it would look nice with my Japanese maples..I had a white ceramic pot a neighbor gave me..didn't leave it out..was in the shed..it stiil cracked..

thanks debra!..I didn't buy or plant the green one..I have 2 more in addition to this one..the one in the pot was about halfway in the path..the other 2 are growing together where they can stay for now..thanks for the suggestion..I'll check it out..

I’m bummed I missed your first post NW! The bowl looks great, hope it survives the winter. My goodness, you’ve got a thing recently with digging up those big guys : ) hope they do well in their new homes!

Sherry..thanks!..they'll be fine in my shed..I first tried 2 Albomarginata Undulata in pots..they were fine but I decided to use the pots for something else..then Blue Mouse Ears..Praying Hands..Regal Splendor..so far any in pots were planted later outside Lol..PH and RS will be planted outside when I get around to it..I've liked everything in pots..but for different reasons decided to plant them..a squirrel ruined the pot (RS)..digging squirrels almost ruined PH..I wanted Blue Mouse Ears in the nooks and crannies of my stones..it would be nice if my first plans always worked..

hostas_for_barb..what a nice mini collection!..my container is large..I planted small hostas that I pulled from my yard..they could be too big someday..when that day comes I'll fix it..Lol
