Were there too many melons on the same vine? I'm assuming that watering was sufficent during any dry conditions?

Nope, no more than one per vine. I should have said "others on the vines." Watering was fine. Plenty of foliage. I did add more nitrogen this time (my soil is overabundant in K and P), but maybe that made the plants work harder on foliage?

Are you saving seed or buying from seed company every year? I've found that saved seed doesn't always produce as expected.

As I said, I'm using the same seeds as I have been for the last few years. They are purchased seed.

Just to clarify a bit Dan, are you saying that you are using the same seeds from the same packet you used from last year? Or that you bought a new packet of the same variety for this year?

Sorry, I wasn't being clear. Same packet of seeds, stored in the fridge. No reason to believe the variety has changed inside that one packet of seeds. Small melons on several plants, though, which would correspond to several seeds. So if they mixed in some bogus seeds in that packet, I just happened to pick them out this year.

This pretty much has to be about growing conditions.
