open pantry help please

we are moving into a home that currently has an open pantry. it looks like there were sliding doors here before. or maybe those accordion doors that fold in on themselves both ways. I really don't think I could keep it neat and organized enough to do an open pantry. what kind of door or covering should I do?

here are some of the things I was considering.

I think double bypass barn doors would work so you don't have to completely eliminate that option. I agree, you need doors, though!

Just Say No to barn doors. You don’t have the space for the track, they’re noisy going back and forth, and that look reached its peak about 10 years ago.

A recent episode of Ask This Old House showed an installation of bypass doors for a pantry. I am not sure if your opening is wide enough, but it’s something to consider.

Ask This Old House Installs Bypass Doors on Pantry Opening

“Nathan installed two JELD-WEN Colonist Primed wood interior doors that most closely matched the dimensions of the opening. Nathan recommends ensuring the door has not been pre-hung and does not have bore holes in it for a standard knob. These doors can be found at home centers.

To make the doors bypass, Nathan mounted a Bypass Door Hardware kit, which is manufactured by Johnson Hardware. The kit comes with all the hardware required to mount the doors.

All the other tools and materials required to install these doors can be found at home centers.“

May we please see the cabinetry in your kitchen? Also, could you please provide measurements? My inclination would be to pull out the shelves and door casing and install two pull out pantries in that space.

A local custom cabinet builder could install doors for you and make them match your kitchen cabinetry style. You could even make the bottom portion drawers and the top portion doors if you wanted.

@mdln I like the picture of the first set of doors with the part transparent section. what I can't tell is how do these doors open?

I would use a pair of solid wood doors matching the other doors in your house. Use sturdy hinges and build shallow storage racks top to bottom on the inside of the doors. You will be amazed at how much useful storage space is gained using the back of the doors.

I like the idea Lindy Lee, but the only potential problem is if I put doors that open outwards I will not have room for a dining room table I'm afraid. I think they would swing out too big

How wide is your opening? I hate bypass doors as it is impossible to see the entire closet at one time. It would irritate me to open the wrong side and not be able to reach what I wanted. Sounds like a set of bifold doors would be the best choice

very good point. I appreciate you all sharing your thoughts

If there is something on the other side, like a closet or a hallway, I might consider closing up the kitchen side and putting the opening on the other side. The kitchen looks big enough to not need a pair of doors in your breakfast nook for storage!

But replacement doors....Frosted or reeded glass would be my choice, bifold if the opening works for it. (Open pantry? Never!)

Look in the basement/garage/attic for the missing doors. Even if they're the wrong style, they might help decide.

You could always just have fun with it and do a beaded curtain.

Do you need the space as a pantry? Once you add a dining set it will be a nuisance accessIng and is not convenient in general.

You could use for large platters, bowls, glasses, vases, etc and could remove the last shelf for taller items or to balance the space. Wallpapering the back could also be an idea and adding complimentary cushions on window bench would create a cute space
