I would suggest you go with waterproof vinyl plank. The waterproof type due to being in the kitchen. You won't have to freak out if water, cooking mess or pet water/food get on the floor. The selection now in the vinyl plank are quite good. Durability is also a plus. Cost is also reasonable.

The color selection is going to be the fun part. You'll be adjacent to the pine flooring, so i would try to match, but to compliment.

If you don't prefer the vinyl tile, then my next choice would be porcelain tile. The color is solid through the tile. It is extremely durable and prices range from reasonable to oh my. Select a rectangular tile/plank that can help elongate the space, making it appear larger.

@Lisa and @emendez57 I have the same issue with wood flooring all around my kitchen. I actually don't want wood flooring in my kitchen. It looks pretty but that is as far as it goes. I'm going with a luxury vinyl tile that looks like stone. I can scrub that floor with hot water, it's very durable and I don't have to worry about it. If I had done more research on the flooring in my home I would have done luxury vinyl wood look but I was so set on a "wood" floor. Mannington is my choice.

I was considering continuing the same hardwood flooring as in the hallway but was worried about any water damage. This is very helpful, will look into the luxury vinyl flooring.

Vinyl wood next to real wood isn’t necessarily a good look. i have had a wooden floor in my kitchen for 30+ years and have never had a problem with upkeep. Ever.

I would NEVER put luxury vinyl flooring next to real hardwood. Running it next to the real thing you can really tell it's fake. I've had hardwood kitchen floors for 30 years with 3 dogs and 2 kids and a messy husband. I've had no issues. In addition, LVT will never add any value to your home. There's really no such thing as luxury plastic.

I've had wood floors in the kitchen of every house I have owned and have never had "water damage" from normal everyday activities in the house and kitchen. If you have a major water leak, then it doesn't matter what flooring you have, it will need to be removed to replace sub floor, baseboards, sheetrock, cabinets etc.

I would not put luxury vinyl wood look next to real wood either. But I would do a stone look next to real wood. What about engineered wood though? Is that as durable as regular hardwood in a kitchen? My KD steered me away from hardwood in the kitchen. I think it would just be easier to clean luxury vinyl or real tile rather than hardwood or engineered hardwood.

Funny my KD suggested hardwood. 25 years later and I’m thrilled with it.
