Zephirine Drouhin sport(?)

Assuming this branch stays true, and isn’t just a freak bloom, I think I have my first sport! I can’t wait to watch and see what it does. So far it doesn’t look like Kathleen Harrop, being a pale pearlescent pink/peach rather than a lovely baby girl pink. I’ll be interested to see if the color matures into Kathleen, or maintains its own look.

Anyway, I’m excited for the time being, and thought I’d share!

Miya a poor pic, and a poor bloom, but it makes me happy. Haha. :) In the background you can see the normal color.

Mettebee, Martha is beautiful! I think it would be neat to collect all of Zephy’s sports.

Main St, I hope so, too! It’s a very pretty, dainty color. Not quite like Zephy’s in your face pink. :)

Yes, I do have mildew and black spot problems. Usually I just ignor it. Haha :) I’ve grown a clematis over it to cover the bare stems. The branches act like a living trellis. Mine is on it’s 3rd year, though, and has been much healthier this year. It has also been reblooming much better. Last year I got one bloom after the spring flush. This year she hasn’t been without blooms so far, and is setting more buds now.

How cool! There is a light pink sport called Martha - maybe it is similar? I haven't seen it in real life.

MetteBee, that's a beauty! I didn't realize ZD had another pink sport - I knew about 'Kathleen Harrop' but not this one!

It looks like 'Martha' has more petals, while KH has the same number as ZD.

What IS a sport, exactly? I always thought it was a separate plant..

A sport is a genetic mutation whereby a cane will set forth a flower/flowers that won't revert back (hopefully) to the original variation. If you take a cutting from that cane, the new flowers should be the same as the mutated flower and not revert back to the original. Someone else may explain it better or more correctly. :)

I am so happy that you have found this new sport!!! It's really, really pretty!! :)

Wow, awesome! I hope it sticks to that fantastic new color for you!

Do you have much a problem with powdery mildew with your ZD? I am trying out a copper fungicide spray on mine because the mildew is already starting up.
