Fix our kitchen layout

last modified: 6 years ago

We are in the early stages of building our forever home. We are a famlily of five and we frequently have family over. I am starting to work on my kitchen layout. Here are 2 layouts that I sketched out really quick. I am completely against having a sink in my island. ( I like the island more for kids to eat breakfast and snacks and also for entertaining.) Having said that I want a very functional kitchen. How would you change these layouts or would you completely start over. We havent laid out the rest of our house yet as we are going to base the layout somewhat off our kitchen. Its tends to be the heart of our home.
Drawings are somewhat to scale with each block representing about 12in.

It looks crowded for the heart of the home. I have the same layout and am moving soon. I won't repeat the walk around the island mistake. I have purchased an old style kitchen table. I can move or use it however I want. You can always add an island later....

Have you bought the lot yet? I designed our house around the kitchen & eating area, but that's because there were so many good and bad constraints on the dog-legged lot with a river and two wetlands on three sides. The best was wanting the views on 3 sides; part of the bad was the driveway could only go on the extreme north side of the lot, and that determined where the kitchen would be best. Also, we were the last to build, so I wanted to position the house so our views avoided the other houses.

We havent bought the lot yet. I know that may change where I want windows and things like that. But it may be a while before we have a lot. (They are hard to come by in the area we want to be in) In the meantime we are trying get a house priced out so we know ballpark how much money we are looking at to have everything we want.

You can't design a kitchen in isolation--you must have some idea how the kitchen will relate to the rest of the house. You have too much space, and too much wasted space in each plan:

You need to read the thread mdln posted, as well as the NKBA guidelines, and Buehl's New to Kitchens? thread. All contain excellent kitchen planning information.

Here's a rough diagram based on plan #2, and how surrounding rooms might relate. Of course, your ideas, needs, and budget might be completely different.

Thank you! I do have a general idea of the layout of the rest of the home. I do not have any specific dimensions however. I know the the kitchen will open into the living area and there will be a dining area to the side. I have a basic idea of how ee want the entry as well as bedroom, stairs ect. Yalls comments and links have been incredibly helpful!

Do you think these layouts would be more functional with a small prep sink on the island?

Absolutely, especially since your work zones are so spread out. I would have the sink at least 18" wide. I drew a prep sink above (green lines reflect prep path). ETA, plan on a grid. I put the fridge on the shorter side of the L, but if you plan to eat every meal in the DR, and feel that the fridge should be more convenient to the DR than the LR, it can be switched with the clean-up zone. Or, if you switch locations of DR and LR, layout could stay as is. The counter on the fridge wall is extra-deep, to match the depth of the fridge box.

I put a window on the back wall of the pantry, so that when the pocket door is left open, you'll have natural light on that end of the kitchen. The window can be omitted if you don't want sunlight in the pantry.

Thank you for your input live_wire. I agree we hope to find a north facing lot. We are hoping to have this house built within the next two years. So i'm trying to learn everything pretty quickly. The links yall have given me have been a great help!
