COUCH COLOR HELP

Hello Houzz community,

I have 3 design issues. I live in a quasi vintage 3 bedroom condominium. My living room couch color disturbs me. I bought it 4 years ago from Macy’s. I loved the couch in the store, but when it was delivered, I was not happy. Now I know you might be thinking, why didn’t I return it. I searched high and low for the perfect couch, so I wasn’t ready for another adventure.

Next, design issue #2 is the color of the rug. I worked backwards when designing this space. I purchased the couch, then the rug. In recent years, I’ve discovered that the rug sets the tone for a space.

Lastly, design issue #3 is selecting rug colors for adjacent rooms (living room and home office). Do rugs have to have similar tones?

Being at home like many of you has opened my eyes to design flaws. The Houzz community home and professional designers are extremely talented. Please share your gift via photos and written recommendations.

Thank you.

P.S DUE TO COVID, I AM UNABLE TO MAKE EXPENSIVE PURCHASES

P.S2 THE ROUND OTTOMAN IS BEING REPLACED WITH THE SQUARE OTTOMAN

first, I love your rooms as is, love the art above the sofa, love the wall color, love the couch, such a great combination of colors. as for the carpet, the only thing I would change is the size, I think it should be one size larger. the rugs in adjacent rooms IMO need to first look right for the room and yes should coordinate with rooms adjacent. what exactly are your issues with the sofa, the color? it's a rich color and with the rich wall color it works. also love the chair in the adjacent room. other questions, are you willing to change rugs? how much of a rework are you wanting to do? maybe start with a new rug in the living area? are you wanting to change sofa? sounds like you are wanting to limit what you do due to cost, just wondering what you would like to change?

one more thing, the new ottoman looks quite large for the space, even your current one looks too big, that may be something you want to revisit... maybe instead a metal round with glass top to lighten it up a bit?

Your room is nice! What is the lime green piece? The color goes well with your room.

    I love how you’ve decorated!

Do you want rugs with more color and patterns? These are all under $300.

    $160.

    https://esalerugs.com/light-blue-7x10-serapi-area-rug-33119321

$169. comes in lots of other colors, if the orange feels too much:

    https://esalerugs.com/terracotta-8x10-heriz-design-area-rug-33122717

    $216.

Or are you wanting to stay with a more neutral, solid look? Patterns are not hard to coordinate in various rooms .... to me, rugs are like art and don’t have to perfectly match each other. :)

some ideas for rugs... i would suggest a larger rug as well for your office.

Theresa, I’m liking how the shag rug looks! Brings some nice texture in.

gotta love shag, but so many awesome ideas... to me, it's a room that so many different bold colors can work.

I love the scale of the couch, art and the way it works together but think the bluish wall color just doesn’t go well with the other elements. You have some oranges and greens and golds, and the wall color is too strong to work with them. I like the rug that has blue and orange, but it still feels a bit forced. I think if you went with a lighter, warmer, more neutral wall color the rest would really shine.

Cost Plus world market has some nice rug selections, inexpensive too. ( you can always return them) And, they are open. I just bought one last week.

look for a 5x8 or a bit larger.

I posted about 6 choices, but this one seems to be a perfect match for your colors! has a bit of blue in it for the other room. (see my very last photo and comment for what to do in that room if you want to tie in both rugs)

    https://www.worldmarket.com/product/multicolor+sand+jacinda+area+rug.do?sortby=ourPicksAscend&from=fn

I like your warm colors. what about this one? it's rather bold and vibrant, but the colors all work.

    https://www.worldmarket.com/product/zahra-caravan-tufted-rug.do?sortby=ourPicks&from=fn

If you do a super bold/colorful one in the one room, and the other blue chair room is visible, you'd prob want to go a bit more neutral w/that one.

you could also tie in the blues in the one room with a similar type of rug in the other.

This has a bit more blue to go w/your chairs

    https://www.worldmarket.com/product/blue-and-rust-distressed-persian-style-print-ezra.do?sortby=ourPicks&from=fn

more neutral, picks up the green tones.

    https://www.worldmarket.com/product/ivory+and+teal+medallion+rowan+area+rug.do?sortby=ourPicksAscend&from=fn

This blue one has the perfect shades to go w/the chair and the wall color

    https://www.worldmarket.com/product/high+tide+blue+area+rug.do?sortby=ourPicksAscend&from=fn

    https://www.worldmarket.com/product/persian+style+woven+jute+pacifica+rug+with+backing.do?sortby=ourPicks&from=fn

    https://www.worldmarket.com/product/blue-medallion-nadine-area-rug.do?sortby=ourPicks&from=fn

another idea for this room is to do a small rug just under the little ottoman. the size rug you have in here now is too big. I'd expose more the floor, and do a large sheepskin or cowhide type of rug under the foot stool. This way it will work w/the other room

they have almost 300 to choose from, take a look

I like the lime green rug. It brings out (and doesn't distract from) your paintings.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU HOUZZ ROCKSTARS. You all are INCREDIBLY talented. I am definitely going to use your rug recommendations.

I have two other issues. The other side of my living room is seriously lacking everything. I am actually embarrassed to post the photo. I would like to purchase a tv console, new drapery etc.

My next issue is in my mini tv/kitchen area. It’s a small space that needs a PUNCH of help. I was told that 100 years ago the tv room was the maid’s quarters. Once again because of COVID, the budget is low.

    Thank you.

I forgot to mention that the ottomans ( I have a grey one in front of the chair) are loaded with shoes. I have several types throughout my space because I am storage deficient. I would love to eliminate them but where do I put my shoes.

I think the small TV is mounted too high. Can you lower it and add a console under yo Hyde the cords and give you more storage. Maybe even one of those IKEA shoe storage units could doubt as the TV console. I feel like the blue bench doesn’t fit with the rest of the colors.

Nice spaces. Just curious do you need the small tv in that other room? Maybe you could move your desk there and add storage. Just a thought.

The tv looks much smaller than it’s actual size. This room is apart of my kitchen. I enjoy watching the tele while cooking, eating etc. I know I have a dilemma. 😩😩

you didn't mention this, but it seems like you you have no place to eat? the island doesnt have an overhang so not sure how you use that for eating? do you need a dining table? if so, seems like a narrow table in the mini tv area might work, use storage benches for seating to keep room for your shoes.

    O A thanked Theresa Janssen

That’s a good idea that Theresa has. Maybe you can make a banquette on one side and a table under the TV (like a fiber or pizzeria). Keep the door side open or have wheels on the table so it can move. Then you have the TV for viewing, table/bench for eating, and the bench can double as storage.

Can you see the kitchen photo above? Maybe I should have created a new post. Yes, I have a dining room.

I see the kitchen with an island and 4 chairs. Is that where you eat? if that is the case, it seems like it would be very hard to eat there as there is no leg room to sit comfortably as there is no counter top overhang. or do you have another area where you eat?

    O A thanked Theresa Janssen

I casually eat there while watching the tele. For formal dining, I eat in my dining room. Also, did you see the photo of my living room window area? It is above with an explanation regarding assistance.

    Thanks.

I am getting rid of the brown head of the table chairs. Do you have any suggestions? Can you send photos?I thought about host chairs. Also, I would like to add a pop of color to the room via head of the table chairs.

This is the only bold color I have in the room. Please see above photos for explanations.

you have 3 different styles of dining chairs and it feels busy. i might consider removing the tall bench style as well as the brown chairs at the heads and move the two remaining to the heads and get 4 chairs of the same style and bring in color with those..

THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR ASSISTANCE.

can you show all four walls of the living room so we can see how all of it relates together, wondering if there is a better furniture arrangement to help the tv area you dont like. I like the sheer curtains you have, I think you just need more of them. I also like the stand you have the tv on, so that's why I am asking to see how the whole room is laid out.

    Full room shot.

is the wall across from sofa the entry into the room, looks like there is still some.wall.space there, can you take pic from.sofa looking across? what if you moved your tv to the other end where the long mirror is, move sofa down a bit toward the bay window, move mirror to bedroom?(not sure purpose of big mirror as it reflects tv?)and add something else in the bay to open that area up.

The other side of the sofa is my home office. Photos are above.

I love mirrors. I have them everywhere.

So, the french doors (?) to office are across from the sofa? Have you considered sofa "against" window (maybe with sofa table and lamps) and TV console on the wall with mirror? The chaise would then be under the other window. You could use C-tables + coffee table. Keep green bench and accent chair along wall with sofa so paintings stay there. Not sure width of sofa would work in front of window, but something to consider

Thank you! I don’t know the name, but it’s a Home Depot Behr product. Please excuse the messy label. My home was painted three years ago. I hope this helps.

You could swap places with the living room and dining room. 😱. Just thinking outside the box.
