This is the bloom from my baby plant today! And yes, the fragrance is to die for! Jeri, I have him (via Burling) because of you.

What an attractive rose, even as a baby with blackspot! BTW a few spots don't count as far as I'm concerned.

I looked it up and found the following on helpmefind:

"This unidentified Found Rose was collected in Santa Barbara, California, in the late 1950's. The original discoverer has grown it for a half-century, trimmed and trained as a standard, so we are still (2007) in the discovery phase as to its natural habit." "Benny Lopez" is the agreed study name. (Jeri Jennings)

Jeri maybe you can update!

Chris -- I can only update to say that we don't know a lot more than we did before. It does make a nice-sized, arching bush. In my area, the one with the most sun is about 4-ft. wide now, and maybe 3- 3.5-ft. tall ... but it is by no means fully mature. It repeats well. Disease isn't much of a problem here, tho I suppose it could get some blackspot.

No one has come up with a definitive identification, so it will go on being called "Benny Lopez."
