One of the Isoplexis?

Yes, Isoplexis canariensis, sometimes referred to as Digitalis canariensis. So closely related to foxgloves :-)

I can't argue with that ID.

It has, however, raised another question.

When I was in the Canaries, I took these pics of a plant in one of the Gardens. It was plainly labelled as Isoplexis canariensis (Canary Island foxglove). The flowers are very different.

So what is this?

It seems, at this point, that either I. canariensis or I. sceptrum could fit the bill.

That's tomorrows research.

As to where? The best I can say is in the hedgerow beside the public footpath running adjacent to the lane going from Bosveal carpark to the hamlet of Durgan, on the River Helford. I guess, you, floral, may have an idea as to where I'm talking about.

Amazing plant to find beside a public footpath. Somebody knowledgeable must be gardening it.

Definately not being cultivated. My suspicion is that they are a legacy of some garden dumpings.

I believe I have it. They are, as floral said, Isoplexis sceptrum.

The ones on the Canaries are correctly labelled as Isoplexis canariensis.

Google fooled me. I did a quick look at images of the 2 spp. and got very similar plants. Bad image labelling and me forgetting that images are often mislabelled on Google.

Well I’ve never seen I sceptrum in my life so wherever it came from must be a hell of a garden. I suspect the people at Bosveal House might have gardened their path to the beach at some point. Or perhaps, as you say, dumped some garden rubbish. Maybe they even originated in Trebah or Glendurgan.

Alright floral, now you’re just making up words, and that’s cheating at scrabble!

This is Cornwall where 1/2 the small towns are named after obscure saints, or have names that are totally incomprehensable. The locals might speak English, but the Cornish language still lives on.

Those do look like lovely gardens floral, and I was entirely kidding. I know that names are very different across the pond... like Featherstonehaugh.

Nipped back yesterday, but could find no trace of either the Berberis or the Isoplexis.

Checked my scant cryptic notes, for the previous visit. Then the penny dropped.

I also popped into Trelisick, which I had totally forgotten about, as I was so totally disappointed. Went there to check up on a couple of plants, but had no access to where they were, as their Covid-19 one-way system omitted those areas.

So. Apologies, the Isoplexis sceptrum are actually in Trelisick Gardens.

Mystery solved. It did sound rather an exotic find, even for a Cornish footpath.
