Screens are a must for me...on any windows that are operational, no exceptions. I extend that to include doors. We've installed storm doors that can have opened screened areas if wanted (sliding glass). Your need might be different depending on your neighborhood, living area for doors but I'd never skimp on window screens.

Shades would depend on the home's exposure and need for privacy. My living room is one long wall of floor to ceiling glass that gets morning sun when leaves are off the trees over winter, private, no real need there. Same with my kitchen. Master facing that direction does have shades, and draperies.

On the west side of my house, a tree protects my office from afternoon sun and glare but that's not true of two bedrooms on that side. Without shades or blinds, those rooms would cook in summer, add heat to the house....and like the master, while no views to neighboring houses, it can still feel less than private without window coverings so they are there, and use is optional.

Depends where you live. I've lived on the east coast and I would never have windows/doors without screens. They are necessary due to all kinds of flying insects.

Currently live in Los Angeles and screens aren't necessary here. We have 2 sets of french doors that are open most of the time due to dogs going in/out and they do not have screens. No issues with bugs here in LA, other than a stray fly once in a while.

We had another thread here recently about screens and many people will remove the screens from the windows that they never open, specially if those windows face a nice view.

We open windows as often as possible so screens are a necessity for us in Minnesota (State bird is Mosquito). We have them on all windows because it results in a more uniform look than some with and some without. As well, every window in our house will potentially be opened a few times every year.

The screens we have (Made in Alabama) are surprisingly unobtrusive so aesthetically don't look much different than windows prior to screens except for a bit less reflection. Photo is with screens.

If you're not going to install shades, I recomend you don't dance around naked for the neighbors to see.
