What are old window locks made from?

I have a 1920’s bungalow and am getting the inside trim repainted. I removed all the window sash locks and lifts and want to restore them (or maybe just clean them up) while they are off. i‘ve been reading most likely that they are brass (tarnished to a dark brown over the years). But at least when I took out the screws, they felt like they must have been made from steel because they would magnetically stick to the screwdriver (and I believe brass is not supposed to be magnetic).. Is it just the screws that are probably steel? I don’t want to do the boil it in water and baking soda approach if it’s steel and likely to rust. The hardware is at the house (it’s a rental so I’m not there right now) so I can’t check the magnetism.
