Love the trees! Were they installed while green or were they dried?

We are planning to put structural support posts both upstairs and down in our new house. I like the idea of using tree trunks, and wonder if we can use them green, or if we need to have them kiln dried for best results. We live in Western North Carolina, and have oak, maple, hickory, black locust, beech and poplar that may be cut to build this house.

The trees were harvested on-site as the building project began. They were limbed slightly, stripped of their bark, and left to air dry during the early construction stages. During framing, the timbers were notched and secured in place over them, and during the remaining phases of the job drying continued and some checking appeared. During final finishes, the trees were sanded and sealed with a penetrating oil.
