I’ll start with the question so you don’t need to read the whole backstory: Can anyone identify what insect the eggs in the picture below came from?

The story:

I planted bean seeds in an old petunia 6-pack, stupidly re-using some old potting soil. Two weeks later, after none of the seeds germinated, I dumped the potting soil out expecting to find rotting seeds. Instead I found nothing – no evidence of the seeds whatsoever. I did notice some tiny worms in the old potting soil which I disposed of in the yard waste. Using new potting soil, I tried again and once again, nothing had germinated after 10 days of relatively warm weather. This time I simply added a second seed to each of the cells. Two weeks later after nothing appeared to have germinated, I dumped out the potting soil and found… nothing, except lots of the eggs shown in the picture above, about 4 or 5 in each cell.

Someday it will be warm enough here in the Pacific Northwest to plant bean seeds directly in the soil (sigh), but until then my only hope for fresh beans is to start them indoors. Yes, I’ll use a different 6-pack but I’ll still wonder what kind of critter has effectively devoured 30 or so bean seeds in my greenhouse. Any ideas?????
