The subtle grid of the waffle weave counters the flow of the shell handsomely. Well done matching the pockets! And I'm sure it's very comfortable. And you wear it well! I'll bet your brother looks just as dashing in it.

I took pictures of Kevin on his phone, but I forgot to take photos of him with my camera. Maybe I will get copies from his phone. It does suit him well, and he also has the same white hat, which I bought two of by accident. The hat looks better on him, but then he almost always wears hats, since he is a redhead.

My mother was a master at sewing and tried to teach me. It didn't take. I'm a massive klutz and knew my fingers would end up under that needle. The power of it scared me! I'm probably one of the few people on this planet afraid of a sewing machine. Ha. But I know my limits and that's a trip to the ER just waiting to happen.

So I bow to those talents, because I know just enough to know how hard it really is.

Very impressive Lars! I wish I had a fraction of your skills. I have a really old sewing machine in a cabinet. It’s a Kenmore that was given to me in the early 80’s. I only have basic skills and can sew a straight line, but I am happy to have the old clunker.

Great job Lars! I love the fabrics. I am not sure I had heard of a cabana jacket before you shared yours.

Cabana jackets are extremely practical and comfortable - more so than a robe - and I do agree that they would be good for women as well.

They were especially popular in the late 1950s and early 1960s, and I think I remember seeing them in movies of that time.

I am planning to make matching swim trunks, but I have to get some material for the inner part.

justerrilynn, that photo is very similar to the jacket I made, except that I did not make raglan sleeves. I did line the pockets, however. I'll have to remember to put a small pocket on the trunks - I like that detail. Nice to look 20-something again!

Lars, I added another edit above. There are some very cool vintage buttons on Etsy.

ETA: they wouldn’t have to be swim trunks would they? How about a panel to hide a stretch waist, but still have a fly?

I actually do have some vintage swim trunks that would go with this jacket, and they do have a waistband that buttons.

I did buy some vintage mother of pearl buttons on Etsy, but I have to find the right fabric for them. I also have a collection of wooden buttons. When F&S Fabrics opens again, I can shop for buttons there - they have the largest selection I've seen in L.A.

Personally, I do not wear plaid and do not have any plaid clothing, but Kevin might. I'm just not a plaid type of guy.

Really like your idea of painting the fabric. I find painting fabric very satisfying. Some of the fifties & sixties prints would look so much better super sized.

Lynn, this is the one that I'm keeping for myself:

It has regular terry cloth for the lining and is heavier and warmer, but the lining is also a bit more absorbant.
georgysmom2, I always wanted another sister! I have two younger brother (and an older sister), but I was glad when my brother in Texas had daughters - so that I could make children's clothes for them. I've made clothes for my sister, mother, and grandmother, but I don't know how much they appreciated it. My mother complained when I made silk and linen clothes for her instead of polyester! She hated ironing but soon learned that linen is very easy to iron.

At least my brother Kevin is more appreciative and has even paid me in the past for some of the clothes I made for him. He's helping financially now as well. He posted a photo of himself in the new jacket on Facebook, and one of his friends said that he looked like Mr. Palm Springs!

We are enjoying the cabana lifestyle, and I will be making more jackets. That way when we have guests again, we can lend those jackets to them.

Hey Lars you could also corner the market on post heart/ chest surgery apparel. You could do the type of shirt you are making except with a soft sided zipper instead of buttons, or just have decorative buttons with the zip. I found a sort of uniform version with pockets and zip for a friends post heart surgery that I ended up hand painting. There’s not much out there. When my husband had his surgery a few years back I couldn’t find any cozy but company presentable shirts that had a soft side zip and pockets for stuff.
