Window treatments in a color other than beige or white. More art or items of interest on the walls. A corner fireplace demands a different furniture layout: one sofa should probably face the fireplace from across the room. Turn the rug to orient the shorter side with the fireplace. A bit more color in accessories and art. (Art can be paintings, posters, photos, wall sculpture.)

I like the art over the fireplace. Mirrors should reflect a view, in my opinion or have a purpose. Is there a hallway where you need a mirror for a quick check on your appearance?

Then, I would put art over the console.

Honestly, I love the calming effect of neutrals. It’s alway been my preference.

But.....you feel you need something, so I also agree that a rug will give you the biggest impact.

From an Eastern Feng Shui perspective, a mirror over living room fireplace can be an excellent placement. Most auspicious.

And aesthetically speaking, I think the mirror over fireplace and art over console could work well in your space

These are all no cost solutions: You are in a sea of beige. Get the furniture arrangement right before decor. I agree try the loveseat in front of windows and sofa facing TV. Just front third should be on the rug. Remove the mirror (it isn't reflecting anything special) and hang guitar there. Use colors from the art over FP for pillows and throw. I wouldn't hang anything else on TV wall. Ceiling to floor curtain panels.

If you re-arrange as suggested by anj_p you can place the end table and lamp where the loveseat and sofa meet for more lighting. A taller lamp(s) on the console would help. Loose the baskets on the floor to anothe room and find a place to group you plants for more impact. Since you are all white and beige pick up some color in pillows, a soft throw. Agree with switching the mirror and art.

Can’t believe I’m saying this, but I think you need a larger tv to balance those speakers! That would allow for a higher placement as well. I’d try the loveseat centered on the window wall and the end table/lamp on its right (facing), float the sofa/cocktail table centered on the tv, place the sofa table behind it with the lamp on its left, try the mirror over the FP, and create an art gallery wall where your sofa table currently is. I like the suggestion of moving the loveseat. Personally, I don't love coming up to the back of a couch when I come into a room, feels like a wall. Rearranging could make it more inviting.

If you keep the current layout, commit to the asymmetry of the TV wall -- I know it's a pain to move the wall mounted tv, but use some photo editing or some cardboard cutouts to try moving the setup a bit closer to the windows -- if you can do that, you could actually do something with the wall between the fireplace and TV, like art or bookcase.

Agree that the art on mantle is the wrong shape -- you need a horizontal, or a grouping of 2-3 there. Or maybe just leave that spot alone, with just some candlesticks or other small decor -- I find it a bit weird to have a big art moment that you essentially turn your back to (sofa, overall orientation to the room)!

You could hang the guitar right where it is, but you should probably hang it next to wherever you actually like to sit and play it. :)

Wow thank you all. We will definitely be getting curtains, but I don’t want to choose curtains until I’m set on my wall art over the mantle. I really like the art and colors of the floral one but it’s too tall and if I hang it I don’t think it will look good. I’ll start a new thread on window treatments. Here’s a photo of the room with the couches moved. We live in Texas and don’t use the fireplace that much which is why we decided on keeping the window area open rather than blocking it with a couch. I do not like our coffee table, it’s too dark. But we have toddlers, so glass isn’t an option. I’m definitely craving color. One of my favorite design bloggers is Young House Love. Maybe that can give you a sense of the style I’m going for. I also enjoy bohemian accents. Possibly a simple macrame hanging on one side of tv? And a couple floating shelves for small plant or candle? I want a cozy minimalist space, if that’s even a thing! Haha

A new colorful rug and pillows will make a huge difference- and they’re unbreakable. Does the idea of painting the table make you cringe? That’s the easiest way to lighten it up. With little ones, it’s probably not going to work to just drape it with a piece of fabric for now... Your artwork has great color, but it is the wrong size and shape for that space. All of these items are on sale everywhere on the internet. (I know since I just shopped for a new MBR rug.). Pillows can be found at every price point. As for curtains, check JCPenny and other retail websites. Just adding color through fabrics will dramatically change the feel of this room.

That arrangement already looks a ton better. I agree that a smaller rectangular piece over the fireplace would work better. I like the mirror over the console, especially since it reflects your windows. I wouldn't do a gallery wall of family photos unless you really want to display them in that space. We have ours near our bedrooms - but that's all preference.

Since you have LOs, I would definitely add color using throw pillows, blankets and curtains (I second JCPenney - I got my bedroom curtains there for $40 less per panel than a very similar curtain at a higher end store), and wait for the rest (I think the TV console is a bit dark as well). It's a lot easier not to worry when your stuff gets damaged by your kids when you know it will be replaced!

You’re in Texas and don’t use fireplace often. Also, Feng Shui of sofa w/ back to windows is not the best. In this case it’s the loveseat and not main sofa, which is better but still not ideal. And if you would prefer the open window views, try loveseat in front of console; loveseat would block less of fireplace.

Also, I recommend a slim sofa table for the back of floating sofa/the primary sofa.

Change the colour of the speaker cloth from black to white/beige. It is easy to do and the proper speaker cloth is available on the internet if you can't find it locally.

What would be the order of things? 1) art over mantle 2) rug 3) curtains 4) accessories??? I don’t want it to feel matchy-matchy. I’d rather it look eclectic yet simple and cohesive.

If it were me, I would choose the piece that I want to be my statement piece - either art, rug, or curtains, and then pull colors from that for the rest.

I agree with the lighting being to dim, but realized the blinds are drawn and the ceiling light fan isn't on - do you have better lighting with those? I absolutely think your best friend is going to be color. Pick an accent color and run with it. I do think you are in need of curtains as well. I'm torn on the guitar idea. I love the way a guitar looks hanging on the wall, but I feel like there would need to be more than one...

I like your art leaning on the mantle. The new arrangement is much better. I don't even think the rug is that terrible. I would put your guitar on a floor stand and lean it on an angle between the speaker and fireplace.

The room has a lot of warm colors in it. Pull some of the cooler blues from the artwork for pillows. You can buy covers very reasonably that can go over your existing pillows.

Inexpensive matchstick blinds would add nice texture to the window area and help bring in some of the boho feel you're looking for. Then add curtain panels to soften the windows. Can you post a closer pic of the artwork so we can see the colors?

The console table on the wall by itself feels off to me. I think it needs to go behind the long sofa or behind the loveseat in front of the window. Then you could add a chair on that empty side of the rug near the fireplace.
If you move the loveseat back to facing the window then I’d still consider the console under the windows if behind long sofa isn’t an option. Fill it with potted plants and give it a purpose. Right now it’s just...there.

I have no problem with the size of art over fireplace. But you need to add more or larger items to group with it. And bunch them closer so they overlap the art a bit.

Another layout option would be to put the TV on the smaller wall next to the fireplace. Then put the couches along the current TV wall and window wall. That would allow you to see the front of the couches (which are pretty but tall).

I also wonder if a more substantial TV surround would help minimize the speakers. (I say this while my husband and I compromised to let him put two big subwoofers on the floor on either side of my antique chest under the TV.)

This one would probably only fit on the big wall and wouldn't work with my alternative layout idea above.

If you have one near you, IKEA has many cheap nice options for curtains. I’ve used them in 4 rooms now.

We actually just bought this media console and it is a pretty high quality piece. The reason it’s so huge is because it needed to hold my husbands center channel speaker. Finally that big thing is hidden! So this is actually an improvement from before! Haha
The mirror is too big for over the mantle. It’s 37 inches diameter and the space above mantle is less than 40” so I think it would look too tight.

Are these curtains from J.C. Penney’s too boring or too neutral? One is silver on white and the other is navy on white.

I’m thinking the navy has a fun pattern and would offer more interest than the silver.

I would stay away from geometrics in the curtains if you're going to keep your rug. How about pulling a color from the artwork or something with some texture in the same color as your walls? What's your budget for curtains?

I do t want it to look formal or stuffy. I want light and airy. Very casual. And we won’t be using them for function, just for design purposes. So I’m thinking semi-sheer? What if I did a simple strike pattern?

We used to have white ikea curtains in living room. But we wanted to start over when we painted the walls white and got new cellular shades (yes I realize they aren’t the most design friendly or trendy). They were budget friendly and better than ugly bulky blinds!

You will feel so much better once you change the color of the outside of that coffee table. (I'd leave the wood finish as is on the inside shelves.)

Consider this an opportunity to add a very personal element to your space. For example, your table redo could incorporate some stencil design in a boho pattern that pleases you -- either using a base color and a second color for the the design OR apply the stencil to the wood as a resist before you paint, so when the stencil is removed, the wood is revealed in the pattern. (Maybe get a crafty friend to help you with this!)

Another option is decoupage -- I've seen some fantastic tables with maps used for decoupage, often over a light green base color similar to your sofas. Using maps of places that are personally meaningful to your family could be fun, and educational for the children. The shape of this table offers a nice option to wrap the decoupage papers around the side up onto the top.

My other thought was a light blue like @freedomplace1 suggested. I think that would add some color and coordinate well with the art.

Switch the positions of the sofa and loveseat...have the sofa face the tv. The current position has the long sofa blocking the fireplace. If you move both pieces back so that their back legs are off the rug, it may feel a bit more open, but it is perfectly okay to have both of your seating pieces on the rug if it is large enough, and it is. Two drapery panels framing the three windows could bring in some color, as well as a couple of pieces of art.

Still need a rug and art but we bought a new sofa and put some cheery curtains up and that did wonders. Oh and took the ugly fan out!
