Please help me create an elegant foyer!

Hi! I am redoing a foyer of a new home (no picture yet...) and would love to get this elegant look with cream walls, wall moldings and the right lighting. I ordered these sconces and am looking for suggestions for a flush mount chandelier that will match and also help set the tone...It is a 9 foot ceiling, so cant be too low hanging... im open to a crystal/elegant style, but would love something affordable (up to $200?). Also can anyone recommend a paint color? Floors are yellowy oak...

Thank you all so much!! I will try to post a picture of the actual space soon....

(all inspiration images, I like the wall molding style of the last image)

these are the sconces I ordered

    Love your choices...very nice

that is great if they can match the wood without having to sand it all and re-stain....

.Collingwood is a greige color so it does have just a touch of grey? Will not be the same look as your whites and creams...I would wait to pick a paint color until after your kitchen cabinets, floor and countertops are in...

And I think I need a month to recuperate from the kitchen decision making, but I'm going to have to choose new furniture for family room (deep breathe), if anyone has any suggestions, very kid friendly cozy kind of room - maybe a 3 seater couch and 2 comfortable accent chairs, or a sectional and one accent chair across from it?... I like when couch goes all the way down to floor so toys and "other" don't get brushed under it all the time

Hey do you mean skirted sofa? Or low frame?

budget and what stores are in your area?

Thank you for the idea about painting later... can't wait to send pics and see it when everything is in....

I think an actual store is a great idea for furniture, I was thinking to order online but would be easier to walk in and sit on it...

Yes always best if possible..what furniture stores are near you I can always look on their website and suggest pieces.

Here is a list of stores my neighbor recommended in NJ (I live on the border of NY/NJ...

Macys furniture gallery, neiman marcus, Churchill and "what a deal furniture"

Question, I would like to wallpaper the dining room with a light blue textured grass type of wall paper, but every image I see with this type of wallpaper the seams are very obvious. Is there any way to avoid this? (please forgive me for insulting such a beautiful room)

the dining room is actually the BEST one I could find in terms of seams... but to me they're still too noticeable

No that is the look of the grasscloth..no way around it....

  • PRO

Maybe just a wallpaper that has a faux grasscloth look? Textured so no linear lines from the grasscloth.

This wallpaper from Annie selke is so beautiful..

    Or a faux grasscloth...

    How things going?

thanks for asking! Starting demo this Wednesday, cant wait!! Made some changes, we are doing wood in kitchen and sanding/staining the entire first floor and stairs =) I ordered the gold pendants you liked best for kitchen island and changed all kitchen hardware to brass (but not plumbing, hope that doesn't clash...) I will send pics as things progress...

Also my cousin works in hotel construction and offered us this high quality wallpaper, I really was not into the brown... but thought with a wainscotting maybe we can pull it of. I guess once we are ready for that step ill hold it up on walls and see.... but that may be a while ;)

Oh everything sounds perfect! The floors will be so beautiful and you will be so happy with it all the way through into the kitchen...oh those gold pendants!!! To die for😍 yes mixing metals will be wonderful you don’t want to get stuck with one finish a nice balance of gold and nickel or polished nickel is nice!

Hi all, the electrician is doing all the roughing and I need to choose where I want to place those two pendants that I posted at the very beginning of this thread. My husband does not want one by the stairs (on that right wall) because he thinks everyone will touch/ bang into it on their way up (he's probably right ;) ) Im having a hard time finding another two spots in the foyer area... I was thinking of just moving them into the dinning room unless you could find a place in here... Ty!

Also any ideas what I should put in the space on the left of the door? under the stairs I was going to hang a peice of metal art I have thats kind of a diamond shape... I also have a large rectangular mirror thats brass I can hang somewhere in here...

Sconces are great for dining room...

girl you need to slow down..no picking out art or hanging of anything..wait until you are all moved in furniture and all than once everything is in place you can start working on wall decor...

We paint those heating vents the same color as the walls so they visually disappear.

Also we are considering adding windows on the right wall of the living room which is west facing, I was thinking 2 or 3 of the same windows that are on either side of the fireplace or a large picture frame window. Any suggestions?

  • PRO

I wouldn’t add windows on that wall. It’s your only full wall. Will you put TV in this family room? If so that is wall for console and TV. Then you will be able to float a sofa and a couple chairs but need to measure your room before you shop for furniture. Smaller scale pieces will work best since you need walk around room in this room. No sectional.

Definitely no big west facing windows unless you want blazing sun in your house all afternoon.

no tv in that room, and i don't know about blazing sun, but we do want more sun light because the house doesn't have that much natural light coming in

  • PRO

Love the idea of more light...try to figure out what your furniture layout might be and than work in windows..I would just match windows that you have on other wall so at least you could have wall space between them.

Julie is this what you mean?

furniture I think would be a 3 seater couch backing that wall and 2 comfy chairs facing it, maybe coffee table in middle

Yes..than you get light.......But still have a good size wall space.

I think I would float a sofa in the room facing fireplace and set of chairs on the wall with new windows pretty table between them with art and a lamp on that wall area between the windows.

If they're west facing and you have nothing outside to block, you will get hot sun in the late afternoon. so if you add windows be prepared for that. something to keep in mind...you don't want to spend a bunch of money getting windows that you'll always keep covered and will heat up your house. you could do a series of piano windows with built in shelves underneath, which may be more tolerable.

Does anyone have any insight on wood stains to use for the french doors? The wood guys are coming tomorrow and I am at a loss...

I like medium/light... nothing heavy or dramatic...

  • PRO

With your wood floors, you might have wood overload. I would paint doors trim color and frame them out in white trim. What about a pair of large mirrors on that wall. (Trying to save you money here). They would bounce light but still keep furniture options open. Is a TV going in this room? Played with some mock ups for you. One with natural stain on French Doors and one with white painted doors. I put mirrors either side of TV console but they could be windows. Mirrors will reflect your other windows. I also did one with art instead of TV. I would float a sofa facing TV. I couldn’t get it into mock ups. Of course, these are just examples. You can plug in styles and colors as desired.

thank you flo! those doors actually lead to my husbands office which is off to the left when u first enter the house

i like the mock ups tho, are u suggesting no couch in the living room? its a pretty large space?

Paint the doors and trim all same white...

  • PRO

No I would float a sofa I just couldn’t get it in the mock up using the photo I had that you posted of the wall you are considering putting two windows. The office french doors I would paint your trim white color.

If the kitchen is to the left of fireplace wall, the back of sofa would face kitchen. That way it is facing TV/art wall. The mock up tool on Houzz has it’s limits too so imagine the pair of chairs angled toward the sofa. Swivel chairs are a must if you put a TV in this room plus a nice coffee table. I love oversized coffee tables in rooms like this. If you post measurements, I can do a scale drawing for you.

Don’t forget your inspiration photo...the trim and doors are all white..

if I remember right the room that has the fireplace and possible added windows will not have a TV?

Hi everyone! I hope everyone is doing well and in good health! I wanted to share an update... things are really coming along!

We stained to floors "golden oak" - love them... perfect medium color and so happy we did the wood all throughout (including kitchen)

Foyer- i love how the picture frame moldings and paint color came out... we ended up staining the french doors, and painter put on too many coats of stain so it came out darker than we wanted, but we actually really like it! Adds a bit of rich elegance... I do not like the light fixture I ended up choosing for this space... I am open to more suggestions, I'm leaning towards crystal.../

Kitchen - I love my layout and counters, overall I am thrilled and feel very blessed... but it is way too white...I'm a bit bummed bc its an expensive mistake =( i love a warm golden glow on white cabinets, so keep trying to buy more and more soft white/ yellow bulbs... but still so white... im nervous to cook in it, which is pretty sad bc i love to cook! Anyways... as you see moldings, plumbing, etc not finished just yet... I just decided to switch from ss faucet to brass, if anyone has a suggestion of one id love ideas...

Dinning room - loooooovvvvvinnnnggg the grass cloth wallpaper! will try to get dinning room set and chandelier that pic up on its elegance!

and pls excuse the mess..... living in construction is a blast ;)

HI, I'd love to add a roman shade and cornice board above the sliding door (that would hide a roller shade). I'd like to use a warm beige, brown, or blue patterned fabric to add warmth to the room... Can you suggest a fabric?

(do i need to start a new thread?)
