I am not finding the entry doors or light fixture modern , have you checked the price for what you wantfor the railing , newels and handrail? I don’t like the newel posts but maybe painting all the spindles black keeping the handrail and stain it to match the new floors and doing the same color for the treads would be a good idea and just change those newels for something simpler.

Hi Pat, We are very transitional in our decorating. My version of modern would be something with clean lines, but not truly "modern" that would not fit in our home. Yes we've priced the update and are prepared for the cost. We also have ½ newells on the walls that look dated too.
