Hopefully someone will be able to give you some pointers. I had a yardwork team trim an fairly tall holly tree. I told them to trim fairly aggressively. I was not watching carefully, trying to limit my contact. MISTAKE

They butchered it so badly I had it removed. It may have grown out but it would have taken forever and it was a serious eyesore. I wish you better luck with yours. It doesn't look so bad

It's in great shape except for the bald spot. Unfortunately the bald spot faces the street.

I would point out that this illustrates the need to keep on top of structural pruning during the plant's developmental years, rather than trying to correct a mistake that has been let go for too long, where the unwanted portion of the plant has started to dominate a greater percentage of the total plant.

The only fix, other than lots of waiting for the side branches to close around the void, is grafting a bud or small sprig into the bark. You may be able to perform a make-do version using what's on hand around the house. Conceptually, it's a simple procedure. And even though it seems like magic, ordinary people CAN do it. Read about the basic procedures and find some instructional videos on Youtube.

I agree that it would have been way better to "nip it in the bud." This was truly the least of the landscaping problems that came with purchase of this property.
