Single Stage vs Two Stage AC in Chicagoland

Have received multiple bids for AC and furnace replacement. All say two stage furnace, but opinions seem split on benefits of two stage vs single stage AC. Taking cost out of the decision, does a two stage AC provide a better comfort level than a single stage? Any reason a single stage AC would be recommended (aside from cost)?

The advantage of two stage AC is more about comfort and improved dehumidification than operating cost savings. You will need to weigh this in mind versus the cost difference. The two stage AC will require a two stage var speed furnace. You do want a system that is an AHRI match.

Chicago climate is low use AC. I doubt you ever recoup the cost of a 2 speed AC in Chicago area.

Most years the AC season amounts to 3 months of use.

While it can get humid there it is often short lived. If I were you I would spend the money on a better heating system, get the plane jane AC unit.

Lived there just over 20 years ago...
