Canning lid woes

Is anyone else having trouble finding regular mouth flat canning lids? I checked all of our local stores and nobody had any. Took a trip to the Amish store where I usually buy them in bulk and they didn't have any. I was told they quit making them in 2019. They had ordered a case of them for $4,000 in March, and were told they no longer have them. I looked on Amazon and found some for $9.00 a pack. You've got to be kidding me!

The Amish store did have one piece lids that they said work for canning. They had one for BWB and one for PCing. A customer there said he has been PCing meat with them. I bought a few to try, but am leery BWB salsa using them. Has anyone ever used the one piece lids?

I ordered 24 boxes back on June 15th but they're still on backorder at Goodman's. They did offer to refund my money, but I decided to wait as they did have a good price on them and figure eventually they'll fill the order.

Are we talking about the regular Ball or Kerr lids? I ordered mine from Ace Hardware in May and June. It sounds like you might be in the US so you may know the store. Of course, they may out now as supplies appear short and canning season is heating up. The pun was not intended :)

I have used the "one piece" lids, if you mean the ones that just screw on, like lids on commercial jam/jelly etc. They worked fine but it was difficult to tell whether I had a good seal, there was not a distinct "bubble" like there is with the Ball/Kerr type flats and rings.

I was afraid there would be a problem with getting lids, so I stocked up back in April. I got some here, and they do ship:

I haven't looked for lids since spring 2019. My son bought a box of the older type ball and Kerr lids at an estate sale last year. I haven't had to use any of them yet though. They look fine but do require heating in the BWB before use.

Thanks all. I did use some of the one piece lids. They had a button that shows that they sealed. 2 out of 13 I used had the button down the next day. They sure were slower at making the complete seal. I pressed the button down on the other 2 and they stayed down. Put them in the fridge and opened one last night. It was definitely sealed.

Annie-I could not find any regular flat lids on that site. Also I want to thank you for your salsa recipe. I'm allergic to onions and garlic so I can't buy any store brands. I leave out the onions, garlic, and cilantro (don't like) and it is still the best salsa I've ever tasted!

I ended up driving 3 hours round trip to a Mennonite store today and ended up with 16 dozen blue colored Ball lids. That should last me awhile....hehe

cookiemon, I just clicked the link myself. The "flats" are the third row down, $2.49 for a box of 12 Ball lids without rings, $3.99 for a dozen with the rings.

You are definitely welcome to that salsa recipe, I can't imagine even trying to cook without using onions, but when you make your own you know it's safe for any food sensitivities you or your family has.

    Happy canning!

Annie, They still don't show up for me, only plastic lids when I search for Ball lids. Maybe they are only selling what they have to previous customers?

Hmmm. I don't think so, a couple of other friends have ordered from them who never did before and they got them shipped.

Who knows, it's just another example of the magic of the internet gremlins, LOL. I just put in "canning" and got two pages of lids, jars, canners, seasoning mixes, everything I didn't know I needed. (grin)

Looks like a lot of the lids on the Farm and Fleet site are sold out when you click through to them. Annie, I did the same thing you did this spring, anticipating that more people would be canning as they spend more time at home. Farm and Fleet is my go-to source for canning supplies; they tend to be the cheapest around me (and if I don't want to drive 20 minutes each way I just order online).
