talavera tile bathroom disaster

Just wrote this out and it was deleted somehow so here I go again. I started this bathroom almost 2 years ago, and we need another bathroom very bad. I wanted so much to have a bathroom with Talavera tiles and a Talavera sink, it has been one disaster after the other with tile people and running out of tile etc. my dilemma is I have no idea what color to paint the walls, and I do not know what to do with the countertops. The Talavera sink I had picked out I’m not sure that it looks very good in there anymore, but I have another option in the picture over to the left with the sunflowers. Do not know what to do with the countertops, I don’t know what color or what kind. Any help would be appreciated please. I do do mosaics so I was thinking of using the green tile as the countertops in a mosaic design and of course I would use the bullnose for the edges. The cabinet in the mirror do you match it just doesn’t look like it in the picture but it is is set.

    This is the other sink.

I don't think it is a disaster. I think the tiles are quite lovely. I would not do a tile counter; a solid surface would be better. I found Benjamin Moore colors that will compliment the green tile. Happy Valley is on the left and Sweet Spring is on the right. I like Sweet Spring because it is a gray with a green undertone. I have tried all of them and they all look good to me.

I kind of like Happy Valley! Thank you for your input.

Sunflower sink, light solid vanity top, Happy Valley paint!

I like the sunflower sink. I suggest a Navajo White paint. Go neutral with the paint. Let the tile shine. It's the star in the room. The good new is if you get the paint wrong, you can try again until you get one that you like.

I also like the idea of the wooden counter. But, it's not practical. Wet and wood don't mix. You will find yourself doing a lot of maintenance. It's pretty but not practical.

Most of the Talevera baths and kitchens I have seen use tile for the countertops, too. Either the solid green or the solid yellow tile would work. I would try to introduce as few new elements as possible.

My thinking is you need stronger wall color to stand up with strength of wall tile. Then some copper wall art to bring calm solid tone in. I added porcelain drawer pulls.

Flo’s suggestion gives you a dark, dramatic room. The other suggestions get you a lighter wall but a sharper contrast. It’s a personal choice since they would both look good. I think it’s a very different, “wow” bathroom. I’m sure you’re stressed out now, but keep going. You’re getting great ideas here and the tiles are beautiful.

Black soapstone counter. I like 1st sink but it appears I'm the only one!
I may agree with Flo about a strong green wall paint. I would finish everything else and then photoshop wall color.

Just do great lighting too, very important no matter what the wall color. Remember the predominate two colors are the lower tile, shower tile and flooring and they are all saturated color.

    I’m a talavera lover too!
I’m planning a laundry room with lots of tile.

I think Dekton’s Trillium is a great balance to the tile.

I’m doing a sapphire sink from Whitehaus to bring out the beautiful blue in the tile. I chose this high back sink but they do have other options.

My floors will be wood tone, the cabinets a light gray that is in the trillium. Wall color will also likely be a color from the counter.

Hope this helps! Whatever you decide, I know it will be a beautiful room. :)

    Love that blue!!

Thanks, Flo! I just love it. I wanted to do my whole kitchen with this style but decided to downsize to the laundry. 😂

I just realized the green tile is already up and not a mock-up. My colors probably aren’t much help then.

I have done a similar green tile in a kitchen before. Soapstone, preferably with a bit of green in the veining, will look wonderful.

There are other dekton colors that would work as well. I think a worn metal look pairs great with the tile.

Also - if you’re struggling with running out of tile, I’d highly recommend Mexican Folk Arts on Etsy.

My tiles came beautifully packed. They were fast and beautiful. I don’t know where you are, but I’m in San Antonio and their prices are far less than anywhere I can find here. Straight from Mexico. :)

IMo this is a good example of too much of a good thing but now I agree a dark dramatic wall color to actually help to blend those wall tiles into the wall a bit and a very simple counter maybe even green soapstone.

Don’t know if this will help you. This is my kitchen with the bright green tile.

Good luck finding the combination you love

Hooray for your decision to be bold with color! You are just overwhelmed by the two years of struggle. Hang in there! You are in the homestretch so don’t look over your shoulder now. This will be spectacular!

@Sharon Negrete: I think soapstone would be terrific as a countertop. And I think Navajo White is definitely a wall color to consider; it really sets off art. As far as the sink is concerned, I think I might like a pretty plain, round, glass vessel sink with a very simple faucet.

Your kitchen is GORGEOUS, @pngntx! Simply perfect. 😑

Maybe too much of a good thing? Try a hammered bronze vessel sink or a concrete vessel sink instead.

Actually, I think I might’ve changed my mind vis-à-vis the countertop material. You stated that you are a ceramics artist, correct? If that’s the case, I think it’d be a shame if you didn’t take your talents to the countertop AND up that wall, creating a tiled mirror border and perhaps a border around the lighting (sconces!)

I put Dried Basil on the right; Happy Valley on the left. I got the colors by match greens to the dark tile on the BM website and then looking at what they recommended as a coordinating color.

So fun to see this gorgeous tile work!

I think the second (sunflower) sink would be better.

For the sink counter, I am torn between continuing more of the amazing green tile, with the bullnose edging if you can get it (since you say you do mosiacs and have the skills to work this out) -- OR -- using some kind of stone to pick up the color and some of the texture of the stone in the shower stall. Maybe do a mock-up picture of these possibilities?

I don’t think it’s too much of a good thing, but it could be if I get the paint wrong and the counter wrong. This is why I asked you allhere because you’re the professionals, I just don’t like any negativity.
Karenmo your ideas are great I’m going to work on that, thank you.

I figured out why I like that 1st sink better. It ties in the Orange accent tiles you have in the green tiles and the cabinet more than the sunflower sink. Am I still the only one who likes that sink best?
No matter what you decide this will be a beautifully unique bathroom!

And I forgot to mention it also has the yellow in it to tie in the yellow tiles.

I just took a peek at your kitchen. I love it. As a “green” person, those tiles really make the whole kitchen special. I now see your taste and think you might prefer the darker paint as Flo suggested....and maybe lighten up the sink to the glass one Sammy suggested. (I’m not a pro).

As one who has spent considerable time in Mexico, I just want to say that I ADORE what you're doing in this space.

Really avoid glass vessel sinks. Hard to clean, sone reports of spontaneous glass explosions and vanity has to be lower reducing storage space. You have to go all the way! Lol

I'm so glad to see someone else using Talavera tiles!! I used them as an accent in my shower. It does take a good tile setter to install them, as they are handmade and are uneven on the back. I like the second sink because it seems more vibrant. In my experience, the darker the background color, the more the decorative tiles pop. I tried a beige-y paint but it was blah. Then I tried a terra cotta color and it made the tiles the star of the show. So I'd paint the walls a terra cotta shade like your floors. I would use a solid color tile for your counter, either the green you have or yellow. Or use some of those gorgeous border tiles they have. Oh, I have a wall hung Talavera sink, the pattern is very similar to the last sink photos you showed. And I just hung a shaped mirror without a frame. But I wanted a rustic look.
