Odd countertop troubles

We just purchased a house and we are updating it before we move in. I normally have no problems coming up with ideas and visualizing them but this countertop has me stumped. I'm trying to find a backslash that with go with the color and business of the pattern. I would like something other than beige or white. Any ideas?

I think with the business of the pattern that I would go for the background color -- similar to what the wall is painted.

That makes total sense. The thing is, I hate that color. 😆

Whatever you are thinking of choosing, bring samples home and see how it looks

in your kitchen, in your lighting (day and night) . Also remove the 4" backsplash you have

    now before tiling.

Whatever you choose make sure it’s nothing dramatic it could make it look too busy

We have similar counters with travertine backsplash

Do you happen to have a picture?

Personally I think the travertine is enough, other tiles make it look too busy (pervious owners did the kitchen)

Thank you! Yes, my concern is it looking too busy.

I think if you only did travertine (not added the longer horizontal tiles I have in mine) it would be nice. I like the small variety of color that travertine has yet its still so neutral.

Marlene, i agree with you on the wall color, it is terrible and brings out the orangish colors in your granite. A simple backsplash to match your cabinets would work, make sure you remove the 4 inch existing backsplash before you install your new backsplash.

    Thank you!

I've tried to find a tile on line that would compliment your counters, but find lots of pictures of what not to use - along with pictures. Just look for something simple. You probably will have to make a few trips to tile stores to find something. Try bringing home a few and repost.

    The floors are beautiful!

Simple is best. Look for the lightest color in the granite. Of course, remove the 4” backsplash before tiling. Agree, I don’t like the current paint color either.

Leave the 4 inch splash and call things done. At some point you can replace the counter to a color more to your liking.

In my honest opinion, a travertine is not the direction you want to go in. You don’t like the colors of this granite and you don’t want beige.

Consider a darker, richer color tile by pulling the tones from the Bordeaux granite; it could be glass or some of the hand made looking tiles that are prevalent today.

I really like this idea. Thanks!

I’d paint the wall a warm white for now, trying to match the cabinet color. The floors are beautiful and you have nice looking white cabinetry. I wouldn’t pick that granite either, but it’s a natural stone and I could appreciate its dramatic beauty.

I’d focus on other rooms for now. Congratulations on your new home!

    Thank you! 😊

I think these tiles would look good. They're from Complete Tile hand-made in upstate NY.

I see nice ivory color in your countertop.

Either consider wood planks for the backsplash to match the cabinets or purchase wood look tile planks and install them vertically beneath the uppercabinets. Your counter is so very busy that the backsplash should be very subtle.

I’ll throw out a couple of different ideas. I’m seeing a dried seaweed color with this countertop. The mix of colors in this fist pic captures the color combination well but may also be too much like the counter and too busy. The second pic is a subway in just the coordinating green.

Awful. Solid color solid surface backsplash please. That top ain't sharin' nothin'.

@Sofia, the green was actually a color I was considering but when I went to Homedepot and tried it against the color it's just too much.
@Joseph You're right! I've actually decided not to add a backslash for now. I'm just going to get rid of the paint color and just go with a creamy color that I'll pull from the granite. I'm going to also paint the cabinets bottoms a smokey charcoal like what's in the granite and the tops a darker cream. I think that getting rid of the stark white cabinets will neutralize the business of the granite.

I was in a similar situation in our remodeling and I went with a bone colored tile.
We added glass knobs & bronze pulls to tie it all together. We also decided not to remove the backsplash due to the risk of damaging the counter. If you are wanting to calm down the busyness, I love Beverly’s idea.

I would rethink the cabinet colors you want to use; it's not a good combination with the granite or the floors. Plus, it will break up the space further and not get you want to want to achieve. Consider brick looking tiles as well for the backsplash; go to the better tile shops in your area they will have good options.
