Cut new watermelon growth?

Unless we have a really warm fall I suspect new growth will never be able to produce Sangria watermelons I can harvest. Should I try to direct growth to existing melons & vines? Basically cut all "sucker" vines coming off main vines. There are a LOT and I am worried about causing stress to the plant. Do the new vines get most of their nutrients from the original vine - literally where the seed was planted or from the small new roots that drop down at each node? If it is from each node it might not help at all to cut them.
