The "best" is any other apple that flowers at the same time :-) But which one that might be will depend on your specific location......not all apple varieties do well in all areas. Your local extension service office should be able to provide you with a list of appropriate choices from which to choose.

I was doing some research about liberty and enterprise as the disease resistant trees but wasn’t sure if they would pollinate each other. So many different charts on the internet.

Except for triploids, which won't pollinate anything, pretty much any apple or crabapple will cross pollinate any other apple.......so long as bloom times overlap. In my climate, that leaves one pretty wide open, as virtually all apple varieties will bloom simultaneously.....or with significant overlap. That is not the case everywhere.

But do check with your local extension service to see which apples are best in your location.

I went to Orange Pippins web site. If you look at the Gala page they'll link to a list of pollination partners. On the list is Fuji, Honeycrisp, Jonalicious, Jonathan. I'm only listing those as they have a rep for good tasting apples. Also on that list is Enterprise which I mention for disease resistance. It should be noted that Honeycrisp is considered a hard apple to grow and is intended for northern orchards. Zone 6 is about as far south as you should consider growing it.

If you want to do fruit tree research there's a USDA page which lists thousands of apples, gives a picture, and in many cases a "Detailed" description. At this time of year you must check the include unavailable check box or you won't get anything.

When I went to get the link I went there and typed in a search for "malus" and got 6540 varieties. Something I've noticed is that say you want a McIntosh apple with good scab resistance. That site will list many McIntosh apples and in the case of that apple will show a wide range of scab resistance amongst the McIntosh apple sports. Speaking of Mcintosh if you try MacIntosh, you'll get nothing. I have done a search for text and it seems to scan the varieties like a data base would.

I’m in zone 7B. I aready have a three yr old dwarf gala and another dwarf I can’t remember what the name was. I’m new to fruit trees, have done a lot of research about organic gardening but every year seems to come a new problem. the second tree doesn’t keep any fruits but gala is doing much better. I want to replace the other tree with a disease resistant one. thank you all, I’ll do more research.
